Jeff - how come no comment on the price then
13k for a low mileage example with FSH....can't be right
hope it is for you though Magic Boot, make sure you ask about accident damage, ask to see the service history as seems very cheap to me....

It does seem cheap. I'm not the worlds expert on S4 prices but I would be suspicious......
I'd be interested in your thoughts once you've had a testdrive, expecially the comparision with the CTR. My wife has a Civic 1.8 VTi (& I've had the 3-door Civic VTi in the past) and I've always liked the VTi engine except on the Motorway until I bought my 944 Turbo and discovered what Torque is......

Anybody got, had or even driven one?
I've got the option of an (S) plate with 55K miles for a little under £13,000. It appears on paper to be very well spec'd (climate, leather etc.) with a nice powerplant and 4WD. Can't see the miles being a problem as Audi's are supposed to be able to do galactic mileages if fully VAG serviced.
So ....... what can i expect on the test drive tomorrow?

Jeff/Shunty et al,
Didn't get a chance to test drive yesterday as car was late coming in and my work commitments grew throughout the day.
Hope to get a look on Thursday so will let you know all about it. With regards the price, this is trade and not the normally inflated forecourt ticket price. I'm assured that the car is straight, FVAGSH and 1 (vet) owner from new.

Buy it, if its genuine then buy it, if anything you will make money off the car!
Glass's Guide :
99 S Audi S4 2.7
55k
Trade : £14810
Retail : £17323
You would be mad not to Magic Boot!!, if the car checks out with history etc etc you have got yourself a very good deal indeed!, if you dont get on with it then sell it for £16500 and make 3k!!

If you are deciding whether or not this would be a good alternative to a scoob then here are my thoughts after test driving a 15k miles S4 (as compared to my STI 5 and my previous MY98 UK)
The weight of the car is very noticable when changing direction.
The brakes are very powerful but over servoed and no feel. The amount of braking effort seems to increase as the speed lessens - i.e. to maintain a constant deceleration you need to moduleate the brakes more than you would on a scooby.
The gearchange is sloppy and imprecise.
The power delivery is very smooth but a bit dull - would expect more drive out of corners with the amount of torque available.
Suspension seems more focussed towards comform rather than handling.
On a more positive note, the interior is leagues ahead of an Impreza, and the image is a lot more grown up.
It all depends on what you want out of a car. Driving wise I would take an Impreza over the S4 any day, but if you want a grown up, quick, solid family car which will hold its value and not attract too much negative attention, then the S4 is a fantastic car.
Chris.

cwal1 - that's how I imagined an S4 to be to be honest. I don't think anyone is expecting an exilerating ride & power from a standard S4, it's just the tuning potential with having a big strong engine to start with....anonimity (especially reading the recent threads about car-jackings etc) & the build quality/luxury.
I WILL arrange to test drive one before I make my choice as Jeff has suggested.

With 330BHP & 370lb/ft the S4 can not be described as boring.....
Interestly if you turn off the ESP the handling improves somewhat bit I agree with the rest of the comments....

thanks for the update anyway MB.....
TomM - that sounds like a good price...
I just really don't know what to do for my next car.....EVO, P1, S4 etc ???????????
problem with EVO is I'm looking at 18-19k for a 1999 6, which is going to be 4 years old soon, same for the P1, although they do appear to be coming down in price, apart from the one in top marques 24k for a 2000 model!!! I don't think so....

Sorry for the delayed reply guys. It's been a hectic week (some of us do actually WORK more than 8Hrs a day).
Amidst the chaos of the week i've arranged the sale of my CTR but unfortunately never got round to seeing the S4. sorry! Having done a few calculations on my home improvements spend, the S4 is looking a less likely proposition. (purchase costs + running costs)
As i'm going to be transport-less in a weeks time i've got to get something as a stopgap until spring 2003 when the finances should have recovered. I've always fancied one of the last Corrado VR6 Storms as they seem to get great 5 Star reviews by EVO etc and I use to own a Mk3 GTI which was OK when fettled with a little.
Regards.
p.s. the S4 turned out to have 88,000 miles not 55k and will be on the forecourt at £13,495!
