Porsche 968

The 968 TurboS was a very limited run of only 5 cars (lhd), the TurboRS was the racer (3 made, I think). If you find one for sale (and it's real....worth a fortune!)
Basically there are 4 models
968...bit heavy, standard everything 240BHP LSD as an option
968 Club Sport....lightweight version, no rear seats, racing buckets, wind up windows etc LSD standard 240 BHP
968 Sport....UK market only, basically a CS with some of the comfort bits added
968 Cab...softtop version of the 968.
Engine is a 3.0L inline 4 with variocam timing & 16 valves.
My personel preference would be the Sport or the CS.

I am looking at these too.
There is the most amazing looking yellow one on the Autotrader website.
Over priced at 16000 odd but I think it has 18 911 turbo alloys on!
I would go for a 968 sport. History is more important than miles, and most owners are happy to chat for a while.

Thanks Jeff
I saw a Club Sport for sale and wondered what the differences were, it might be a bit spartan for me by the sound of things.

The 968 CS is probably one of the best handling cars this side of a Caterham/Lotus 7 rep. Great fun on track days.
They are basically the last of the line started with the 924/944 models. The Turbo models where binned because they where significantly faster than the 911 of the day. Porsche do not like making things faster than the 911 (just look at the 986 aka Boxster).
Highly recommended

I had a 968 club sport. The Dogs N*uts.
I thought it was a great drivers car - In My top five drivers cars that I have owned. I am no Porker expert but It was definately the best one that I have driven.
MY TOP FIVE - Grin factor cars
Mazda Eunos (Modified)
205 Gti
E30 M3

I would expect a 968 to return something like 25-30 mpg in normal use. Rear tyres will last 10-15K (obviously depending on type/use) fronts 15-20K.
Servicing via a specialist isn't that expensive but remember that even the late models 968 are 9-10 years old and therefore they will require more work than just normal servicing and Porsche don't sell cheap spares. Normal consumables are are similair prices (clutch fitted is around £600)

If you buy one go for a CS... they are excellent cars
There was a yellow un for sale in the Autotrader some 6 months ago with the 18" cup alloys on.... beware if this car is the same one because it is back on the market surprisingly quickly. I phoned the dealer to go look at it (somewhere near Bournemouth) but it had sold
I looked for a while but actually ended up buying an E30 M3.... Been fettled somewhat now and i love it...esp the fact that it doesn't depreciate like the scoob (even more applicable if you import it yourself from Germany at the price I did) That said...you won't lose money on a good 968cs .....if you ignore the wallet eating servicing costs.
Find a good 968 specialist to maintain the car over using the dealer....IMHO

I was looking for a 968 last year, but the only decent one I could find locally was at the main dealer and they wanted 19k for an L plate Sport with 40,000mls which I thought was too much.
The dealer was pretty helpfull though - said all that goes wrong with them is rear window seals where water sits in a puddle the rear spolier so check the boot for damp, and the brakes are 2k to replace discs and pads. He also said they have to mark up a used car like that by 4k to cover the Porsche warranty and profit.
I gave up and bought an Accord R to tide me over, under warranty etc. but will resume the search for a 968 or BMW M Coop soon.

I am getting a 944 Turbo.
Same chassis, same dash, just a bit more "eighties"
...........but when they turbo kicks, its deep joy!
fast reliable and 450quid gets you 300 reliable bhp.

Mark,
That is one fine looking motor, much better than a 911 IMHO.
Does anyone know if any Porche specialists have managed to bolt a turbo onto a CS?
I could be then tempted into getting one as a road going trackday car!

If any of you do buy one (or a 944 Turbo) don't take it to a franchised Porsche dealer.....they'll just rip you off.
2K for pads and discs is way over the top ! You could get a 'Big Red' caliper conversion for less.
The 944 Turbo (which I had for 3 years/65,000Miles) and the 968 are very reliable cars (mine did 150,000 before needing a head gasket) but they suffer from some common problems....
944 Turbo are prone to weak wastegate springs and cracked headers. They also have a tendency to need front A-Arms replaced as the ball mount to part of the arm. I also had drive-shafts, wheel bearings, calipers, wiper actuators, clutch as well as a new straight through stainless exhaust (hand built) Koni adjustable shocks & new springs as well as a AmD chip.
300BHP is easily achievable and can be reliable. Have a look at
www.huntleyracing.com for more parts....
Don't always buy the car with low mileage that's been a 'garage queen' as they do like to be run often and a low mileage car will have it's own set of problems due to lack of use.
I wouln't pay more than 9K for a top quality Turbo now and a 968 CS should be 11-16K depending on age mileage...
The thing to remember is that they are all getting on in age and at some point will cost £'000s to fix.

I have seen three in the last couple of days. I had a look at a black turbo with Linen leather, looked absolutely mint, but no service history on the last 2 years?
The guy said as he had not yet done 1000 miles in 2 years it did not need it. I don't think the belts had been changed for 5 years!
Add to that he booted it from cold, the turbo water cooling pump did not appear to work, a drone from the gear box it did not seem the best deal going, although looked superb.
My wish list is metallic colour or black, Linen Leather, 10 speaker stereo, and an impecable service history.

Make sure that you get it checked by a specialised before you buy...it will be the best £200-350 you'll ever spend.
Try and get one with the late model spoil (like the 968) and the sport seats, cup suspension.

I am not so bothered by the spoiler although it would be nice.
Most appear to have the adjustable Koni's and it will definately have sport seats (hopefully linen leather)!
I am on the 944 mailing list, and have a whole heap of info. Can't wait to get one and get it on track, these things appear to have been designed for just that!
Have a few to look at when I get back from holiday.
If you hear of any Jeff, let me know.
