Seat Leon 1.8 20V T

Very good allrounders, a "grown up" hot hatch. Not the last word in handling sharpness (although the R is better) but they do most things well and plenty of usable grunt.
Recently facelifted, the 2003 model Cupra is now available and look much better than they used to. New bodykit, wheels, honeycomb grille etc. Almost as mean as the R.
With that in mind don't pay anything near list price for the 2002 models.
At under £14k with leather as an import it has to be one of the best value new cars you can buy IMO.
P.S. A chip away from 210bhp, although if you're buying new UK I'd try and find the extra for the R.

How many miles a year do you drive?
What percentage is on motorway/dual carriageway, A or B roads?
Are you willing to lose some excitement and all weather ability but gain cheap 10k services/better mpg/insurance etc?
Do you have enough dosh for the Leon Cupra R? (really tempted by one of these myself)
You have to make your own mind up, I think a few Cupra owners have moved to Scoobys (when they get bored and want 4WD) and vice versa (when they want cheaper motoring).

What BHP is a Seat Leon 1.8 20V Turbo? I had a demo model out for a test drive. The dealer reckons its 180 BHP, but I didn't think they had that kinda power?
Anyone know?

Just bought one... Need to be a bit more sensible for a while (house etc...) had a good test drive in one - still provided some smiles . A lot of car for the money and a bit of poke - not the hefty slap in the back you get from a Scooby tho

"So would I be wise to get one to replace my Scoob?"
I had a Leon Cupra for 9 months. Savings weren't as I'd been lead to believe - 26 mpg, eats front tyres, 10K services more expensive than a 10K WRX, and I only saved £6 per month on insurance. Add in the faults (duff coils, flooded footwells, duff gearbox, wayward trim, rattles etc etc)and dreadful handling on the average bumpy UK A/B road, and I was only too glad to see the back of it, and head back to a Scooby again.
My lasting memory will be www.seatcupra.net A great site, with an extremely friendly and helpful forum. If you're still interested in the Seat (and you should make your own mind up), pop in and say "Hi". Plenty will give you the other side of the coin.
Cheers

Well I'm picking my Cupra on Saturday... It will do nicely until a new house is sorted out... Lots of equipment, straight line speed is very good - but as soon as a corner gets involved things turn grim... Nothing else in the price range touched it really, and in a couple of years I'll be back to Scooby ownership - Hopefully the MY05 will be something to get excited about .
PS. Hi Toonman, thanks for the welcome on cupranet. (Registered as skOOby about a week ago)

Thanks for that guys! I've been a member on here for a while but there's a prob with Tiscali email addresses (so I'm told), so had to register again. I didn't have many posts anyway.
I'll be at Cupranet as long as the members and I feel I've got something to add. Some still don't like me pointing out the Leon's not the World's best handling car though...
Cheers

Well, have owned Scoobies for 4 years (an X reg MY00 at the moment) & I am defecting to Seat Ownership. I have ordered a black Cupra R (210BHP) & should be delivered by the end of next month.
Took a test drive & was impressed. Limited availability (only circa 400 this year), plus the fact that the savings on an import are tiny (couldn't get more than £800 discount) should keep the resale value up.
I have put my Scooby up for sale, (someone make me an offer)

You shouldn't regret it Stevie - I owned the Scooby for 3 years and thought I would regret selling it, but the cupra is fun and the R shoudl be even better cos the handlings sorted. And like you say resale values on the Seat are great, much better than Subaru... Post some pics when you get it - they look gorgeous...

"resale values on the Seat are great"
Not so sure about that. Check with some of the guys in Cupranet - 10 month old low mileage Cupras with leather making £11K at trade in - against another Seat... That's well over £5K in under a year. One guy got £9.5K against another make - 15M old, low mileage.
Sorry, I should stop whinging about them. 7.5 years of Impreza Turbos made me none to receptive to the idea of the Leon I guess. Good idea, but I'm so glad to be back in a Scooby... Shame for Seat, it took me 9 months to return to the "fold".
Cheers

I sold my first Leon Cupra after nearly a year and lost 3k. My mate at work sold his WRX recently and lost 7k. The Leon is pretty good on resale, but you should enure you get a discount to minimise depreciation.
Ive bought a Cupra R today to replace the RS4. Picking it up next week. Car is two weeks old and I got a nice discount.

I sold mine after 9 months and lost £2700, but that was before the R came out. Since then, Leon Cupra values have dropped. There are so many looking for new homes, and with the MY03 just out (and looking like the Cupra should've done from the beginning), getting a decent price for one at present, is hard. As I said before, just check with the guys that've traded recently.
Mine had all the standard Leon Cupra faults (plus a few extras), that Seat just don't seem capable of fixing. Word's getting round now too.
