I had one (big bumper late model) which I sold 18 months ago for about £2.5k. I guess you should get a very good one now for less than that. Have a quick skirt through autotrader to see what they go for.

I recently sold my 1989, small bumper, Oak Green Campaign (PAS, E/W, Leather) for £2480.
A month or so later, i realise i undersold it, but it's easy to say afterwards and the car isn't hanging around on the driveway.
Mine had only done 68,700 miles, was meticulously looked after and was in as good condition as you're likely to find. Had a full service history, though not all from VW. I reckon i could have got £3k for it no problem if i'd known then what i know now.
But on the positive side, i bought a Mk3 16v for £4k, which was cheap, and i have to admit i enjoy it a whole lot more, as the power is more instantaneous, you don't have to thrash it etc.
But i can appreciate Mk2's have more character, if that's what you're looking for...

I have a mint MK2 8 valve, 75k, 1 owner, cost me nowt cos my dad gave it me !
Must say I prefer the 8 Valve (have had both), most of the time its quicker than a 16, i.e. when you arent redlining it. best of all is a big bore 8 valve, TSR 2.1 or similar (170 bhp). Mine has a Magnex and K and N, Rolling roaded at 120 BHP so its not that far off anyway. I was dissapointed when I got a 16 valve (after my MK1 1.8 8 Valve) and sold it after a couple of months, guy who bought it put a VR6 in it !
Love the way they drive (both)

Checkout VolksWizard for some expensive mk2 GTIs. The 1991 16v at £4750 (that's reduced!) sounds great but at that price!

Planky, I'm with Olly on this one, the 8 valves were by far the better car for every day use, the 16 valve just grabbed the headlines for it's big horsepower (for the time), it never got mentioned that the big horsepower was at daft revs, and at said daft revs they burnt more oil than petrol, from new!

My late departed Mk2 16v - 85k from new - run on mineral oil for 10k - yes, higher than `others` consumption for the first 1,000 miles but that was by design - Casrol RS 10/60 after that and consumption negligible.
Superb car - more rewarding to drive than my current P1.
