The VR6 engine makes a lovely noise. Plus a Golf is cooler than a Mondeo. But to be fair, the Mondeo is probably the better car, and will be newer.
Neither for me. They won't be as cheap to run as their smaller engined siblings and the Mondeo has a long way to depreciate even at £6k, whereas the Golf simply isn't as good to drive as a Corrado so I'd always feel like I'd got second best (and yes, I did own a Corrado VR6 so I know how good they are).

Are you looking for a car to have some fun in or a rapid cruise mobile? My m8 has a VR6 with a filter and sounds absolutely awsome, goes very well too! My dad has ST24 which also goes very well but is not all that good in the twisties when compared to the dub!

Opinion time: You can get both these motors pretty cheap (4-6K) and although they are not a scoob or 'teg R they would appear to be relatively quick and entertaining.
Which would you go for, and why?
Thanks for the input!
Oh, if you've driven either of them, what are they like?

Having owned Ford,VW & Peugeot I would say either the Ford or the VW will be good buys for that sort of money. Best to test drive them both and make your mind up from that. Personally I would go for the VW.
As for Peugeot, I imagine they've come a long way since my 309 GTi, but the build quality and reliability have put me off French cars for life. My first car - a 1972 Ford Escort - was better built and more reliable than my 1986 309...
Edited to add that, a mate of mine had a 306 S16 and had loads of teething problems. A fast and good handling car, but the heater is also rather nice if it works, as with electric windows. He got so fed up with the niggling reliability issues, he chopped it in for a slower and less well handling BMW 318ti...
