Default New Car Decisions

Its been a while since I left the subaru fold, but I still enjoy the site, and I value your opinions.

I currently drive a 2010 911 2S. Had for 4.5 years 21k Miles, and loved it. Challenge is my kids are getting bigger and although we have another car I never get to use it as the kids can't really fit in the back anymore (10 and 12 years old).

So I have been looking at alternatives, I'm still ok with coupes and 2+2 but rear room needs to be a lot better than the 911.

I automatically jumped to an M4, but it just doesn't seem special enough.
Considered maserati GT, but the cost or ownership really puts me off.

So what are your thoughts on the M4, and is there anything else I should be looking at.

Budget is circa 60k for something upto 1 year old.

thats nice but my wife drives a Jag XF-S bit of an overlap. looking for something between the 911 and a GT/Saloon.

Just looked at AMG C63, seems to be trying to hard on the styling.

Yeah I'm not overly impressed with the styling of the very recent Mercs either.

We're getting rid of the TTRS in the family for a BMW M4 and it seems to tick a lot of boxes, however, not sure how practical or comfortable it'd be for yours kids in the coming years as they grow bigger. How about an M3, or does the 4dr body put you off and steer you towards an M4??

Cheers,
Grant

prefer coupe. I would only keep it 4 years anyway.

My wife hates the porsche, so I need to be sure before introducing kid sizing up etc as If I start the process she will not let it stop.

Also looking at growth stunting pills for the kids

WRX mate. Better than an STi from the factory, then spend a few hundred quick on a set of drilled discs and a remap and bam!!.....instant supercar slayer with the practicality of a normal saloon. For any more info, ask ditchy.

I'd never go back to a coupe with kids again - so bloody awkward getting in / out.
The M3 has more room in the back than the M4 too.

The Maserati could be a good one, barring servicing costs of course...

Theres also the Panamera - I'm one of the rare breed that actually likes them (and utterly brilliant to drive too)

Stretch the budget a bit and be sensible..... http://www.pistonheads.com/classifie...-stock/4176467

I'm with scooby C63 S and in particular if you hunt around u can get the edition 1 for 60ish

http://used.mercedes-benz.co.uk/nort...r-sale-ye15hyc

there are cheaper 63 etc if u hunt.

M4 is nice but get 5 doors mate always a ballache with 3. Having to get out when they want to jump out etc...

If you want a barge then CLS 400 very fast and Lux.
New GLE ?

M3 has good deals going at moment , new m4 doesn't.

What about stretching budget RS6 has to be the holy grail does it not ?
id still go C63S

M4/3 are not getting good reviews. Unless it's bone dry, they seem to be a bit too skittish. How about a Panamera ? Either a GTS or go the whole hog and get a Turbo?

Actually Littleted is right, getting kids in and out is a ball ache. Kids are getting older and would appreciate a something with a little bit more finesse when getting in and out of the car especially if you're keeping it for 4 years when kids then will be even bigger and don't need the embarrassment of excavating themselves out of when you drop them off at their friends (taxi is an inevitable role of the father!). What you need is something like a BMW X6M, job done!

I've had the TC flashing and a rear end wiggle in kick down, at around 80mph, in the dry....

In the wet......well, you have to learn to drive it differently.
Not something a journo can do in an hours test drive.

Agree about the Panny, but one of those you mention for £60k?

If you are going to be a taxi you may as well look like one... New S8 for 60k. Remap to 670 HP. Spins all four in the dry. Or M5/M6 as suggested if you like skids, RS7 if you like the looks. Used Panameras that are quick for this budget will be much older than a year.

I know I'm only armchair critic here, but having seen some vids of the M3/4 accelerating.. Think I'd be worried about binning it. The famous American vid where he gets slated for losing it on a big open straight road being one of them. Just looked deadly lol

They do look awesome though. There was a pearl white am3 on display for the new mission impossible film at the cinema the other night, lovely. And the M3 is so much better looking than the M4!

I rarely get to 'make progress' in my cars on my own (usually got kids in tow) but I pressed on (within the limits) last night (in my bug wagon) on some great B roads and it still feels good and so planted. I'm not Ken Block enough to try the same moves in an M3.

I think they make some lovely cars, when ever I see a new shape AMG in white with black wheels, I get a tingling feeling.

And I think they tune the sound of the exhaust better then any other manufacturer, I love the little crackles and pops that they do on gear up-change on some of the AMG cars

Must admit, I tend to agree. The new C63 is awful visually, back looks like it's melted in a fire and the wheels.. WTF are they all about?! Look like some max power tat.

The previous C63 is a good looking car, future classic for sure.

Thanks for all the input.

Allready have a Jaguar XF S Sportbrake with R Bodykit and wheels for the kids taxi. This is my car that the kids go in once or twice a week. would be good if we could do slightly longer journeys than what is possible in the 911.

it doesn't need to be spacious 4 seater or a 4x4, had 4x4 for years and vowed not to have anymore hence why we have the sport brake now.

this doesn't need to be huge just slightly bigger in the back than the 911

Sounds like the Panamera you want then, If your happy with your 911 C2S and all you want is some extra room in the back seats then the Panamera is pretty much a 911 with back seats

Is the interior better in the Panamera??? Ive been in a few Porsche 997's and i always find the interior/dash a bit bland for a expensive car. Another thing that annoyed me driving a 997 is the tiptronic gears(prefer a manual model), but most cars of the same era have paddle gears behind the steering wheel, but the Porsche has the same buttons on the steering wheel as a Nissan 350Z, just feels a bit outdated.

Nissan GTR? At least the rear seats look like proper seats and if you're only gonna transport 2 kids occaisionally then there should be plenty room if you slide the front passenger seat a bit more forward for more rear leg room on the passenger side.
