VW Golf R400
Been confirmed by VW that we will be getting the Golf R400 400BHP, 4WD, and look at those super cool seats, still the 2.0litre lump which is quite surprising, even though its supposed to have uprated forged pistons over the Golf R engine.

I couldnt tell you as I only had mine for 28 days
But the things that the older shape R32 had I wished the mk7 Golf R had, like those wing back bucket seats, and the twin exhaust near the centre, plus I hated the wheel design on the Golf R and the tacky chrome wing mirrors and the fake exhaust sound inside the car.

I'm sure those seats are the same I had in an S3 8P. Nice once in, if a little too thinly padded in the bottom area, but robbed lots of space behind and the side bolsters creased badly.
Interesting that its shown with a manual.

It looks very purposeful though,
I wonder if vw can stretch out production of golf for as long as Porsches 911.....!
We've just bought a mark 1 Citi type golf in SA (1992) , they still made it up until a few years ago , in tandem /throughout production of later incarnations

Apparently Audi engineers wanted to use the 2.0 Turbo out of the S3 and put that into the RS3, as it was lighter, and very tuneable.
However, as the last RS3 had the 2.5, it was deemed to be the RS3 `thing`.
Guess VW think differently?
But I bet this car is nudging £50k.

Pity they didn't use that logic with the "R" series of Golfs
For the price tag it shouldn't be using a glorified GTi engine.
Half a Bentley engine has a better ring to it...don't you think?

400 bhp sounds pretty good though and 4wd

Hmmm...
I quite like it. The standard Golf R looks dull as dishwater so you need some from of differentiator.
I recon it will be priced just under A45 AMG money in basic form.
Standard Golf R is £31k
Standard A45 AMG is £38,195
Standard R400 say £37,999.

I do not believe for one single minute anyone buys these sort of cars because'they are practical and have a boot and dad can have have a blast when the kids aren't in the car' not for one minute....
So,you would buy a caymen and save £10k

Fast hatches with space for kids are handy for convincing the wife they're a good idea...

It's not just Dads who need to buy the Hatchback. People like hatchbacks and saloons. More practical everyday.
A Golf & Cayman are 2 different cars, and I'd suspect most people with a Cayman, also have another car. Probably a hatchback.

Dramatic way to get yourself a fast hatch

I often wonder how much power is too much power in an everyday car. I'd understand if it was a bespoke sports or thunderous saloon, but a 400bhp hatchback? Manufacturers can try and rewrite the rules, but underneath it is still a family hatchback where it's underpinnings is initially designed to take the kids to school and get the shopping. Sure there are hothatches that provides a compromise with decent level of performance at an affordable price. But £40k+ (likely) for a hothatch? £40k can get you some serious metal.
