Any triathletes on here?
Hey folks,
Just wondering if there are any triathletes on here at all? How long have you been doing it, which is your strongest competency, any tips for the transitions etc?
I have my first event coming up this weekend in Cyprus and any tips on anything, including dietary etc would be appreciated! Distance is Olympic.
Cheers!

I've done three Sprints, all with open water swims, one with MTB cycle, the others with road rides, all with hilly/off road runs.
Won the first, 19th/200 in the second (a rather more "serious" one!) and a nasty injury after the swim (sliced foot open) meant I hobbled in at 46th/250 in the third.
The hardest transition is swim to cycle - fill your cycle shoes with talcum powder and if possible, don't wear socks. Get a number belt too - paper numbers pinned to your top is a PITA. Get some tri shorts for the whole event.
Good luck!

Only done 2 sprints, this year bust toes so couldn't do much.
However both swims were shortened cos sea was slightly rough
Worst part is definitely the run.
I'll do standard ( Olympic ) distance next year for sure
Was in top third for them

Running is easily my strongest discipline; it's nice to blast past someone you couldn't catch when on the bike!
IMO, despite doing a lot of distance sea swimming, group start swims are quite unpleasant. I've not worked out the best tactic yet!

I was a Cat 1 cyclist, a decent swimmer but a poor runner, very annoying to be overtaken by people I'd left for dead on the bike. If I learned anything it was to cruise the last part of the bike or the run would be a disaster. I used to clip the shoes into the pedals and gradually work my feet into them as soon as possible in the ride, not sure it helped much to be honest. Practicing the two transitions is very worthwhile, can save minutes. Good luck in Cyprus!

I've done some short course events many years ago.
I had pull fastenings on my running shoe laces so I didn't have to tie them. Bike helmet upside down with glasses in ready to put on. The cycle to run transition kills your legs, so practice this again and again. Take it easy(ish) on the last 3-4 mins of the ride. For a sea swim find someone who's travelling a little faster than you and swim in their wake.
Mostly, enjoy and have fun.

Does no one know the rules?
http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/#42
Rule #42 // A bike race shall never be preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run.
If it’s preceded with a swim and/or followed by a run, it is not called a bike race, it is called duathlon or a triathlon. Neither of which is a bike race. Also keep in mind that one should only swim in order to prevent drowning, and should only run if being chased. And even then, one should only run fast enough to prevent capture.
