any sparky's on here? problem with house electrics
having a few issues with the sockets in our house, ive just gone to put the kettle on and it wouldnt work so i un-plugged it and put it back in and it still wouldnt work.i moved it across (double socket) and it worked for about 30 seconds then stopped so i moved it back again but as i pulled the plug out it sparked.
i put it back in the original place and same again it wouldnt work-this double socket gives same problem with the toaster aswell
we have problems charging mobiles aswell,my mrs will put her phone on charge at 10pm and by 7am its only charged 20%,we thought at 1st it was her battery so we swapped as we have the same phone but still made no difference, now and then it charges fully.if we use a different socket it works fine
any ideas?

Is it just this one socket? As when you started talking about mobiles charging it suggests its more than one? If it is more than one, then call a sparky ASAP mate. I'll try and fix most things but not house electrics. If its as Big-G says and just the one socket just turn off the electric and unscrew the socket as it could just be a loose wire, I wouldn't do any more than that though.
Make sure when you turn the electricity off that it IS off

Help
Hiya m8 I'm a spark. Does the problem just happen at the one socket or at other ones as well. If its just the one then take the front screws off, check the wires for damage and tightness at the connection. If all okay it might be the socket

After only six years, we've had two sockets and a light switch "fail" two cheap sockets and the light switch was loose wires....
Not very reassuring. Quality UK workmanship - NOT !
dunx
P.S. Also had two diverter valves fitted to the CH by British Gas, they barely managed to last 3 years !

I generally use MK sockets etc, and have had no problem with their stuff.
if you think it's bad here, try Legrand stuff in France: VERY expensive, (€18 for a surface mount double socket you have to wire up both sides!!!), made of horrid "chewy" plastic and VERY little room for any wiring
Then there's the stuff for mounting in walls: €20 a double socket, still has to be wired together for both tho work, needs a back box (€0.90) a mounting plate, (€2.60) and even a front cover (€1.20)
Still, it generally works once fitted.......

You MUST make sure that the socket is safely isolated before sticking your fingers in there...switch off the relevant circuit breaker or remove the relevant fuse, carefully undo the faceplate screws and then check that the circuit is dead using a voltage indicator or multimeter...if in ANY doubt, call a competent spark...
