This is something I feel very strongly about. I hope you all can sign the petition.

http://www.change.org/petitions/prim...share_petition

The little Mediterranean island of Malta where my mother was from, and which during WWII has its place in history as the most heavily bombed place on earth, has serious issues concerning the murder of protected birds.

So on to the issue;
Malta has an EU spring and autumn hunting derogation which is being grossly violated. The derogation allows them to shoot turtle dove and quail, however its become a free for all. If it flies, it gets killed. Many protected migratory species including very rare birds are being blown out of the sky.
There are far too many instances of hunting illegalities on the island. There are 10,000 registered hunters. They are allowed to shoot two birds per day, and by law they have to send a text to the hunting federation each time they murder a bird. In reality they don't. It's often bragged by many about killing upwards of 50 per day.
Also, the birds in the nature reserves don't fare any better. Hunters will kill birds there as well. The police don't have the manpower to protect them and most hunters feel they are immune to prosecution.
The actions of these few are causing deep concern for the majority of the population of the island. Its seriously affecting tourism
So if you feel as I do, and consider all life to be precious, please sign the petition and get your friends to sign it also.
In my opinion killing for fun is so inhumane primitive and barbaric, it should be completely banned.
Thanks.

Someone thinks that a UK based e-petition written in English will stop birds being hunted in Malta.

The petition addressed to the Maltese big cheese, simply reads:

Ban any form of hunting in Malta.
bit too short

We used to see this going on when we were in Malta on temporary duty and we all thought it was a murderous and disgusting activity.

I thought the petition title a bit short as well. However I signed it.
The hunting is completely out of control. BBC presenter Chris Packham is campaigning for a change in the law.
The more international signatures the better. The island is dependent on tourism and these bird murderers are just spoiling it for everyone.
I'm just back from there. I found an injured Golden Oriol in the street. It had been shot. A shot Pallid harrier, one of Europe's rarest raptors was rescued. Not long ago a pair of Egyptian vultures had to have round the clock protection in case they were shot.
Tourists can't even go for a walk in the county side in case they get hit by a stray bullet.
Anyway, thanks to those that signed the petition. Lots more are needed to force the Maltese government in holding a referendum.

Your sentiments are commendable but how would you feel if the Maltese complained about people in this country hunting or fishing for example?
