Default Private number plates - advice re. buying one ???

Okay guys bit off advice re. the buying / selling off private number plates again !! okay there is a plate that I want to buy from a seller on ebay who still has the plate on the car just now and who says will remove it once he has been paid for the actual plate.

so okay if I send the guy the money for the actual number plate, could he send me paperwork that I could transfer the plate to my car or would he himself have to put the plate on retention ( £80 ) first and then go about sending me the certificate for me to have my name added and make me the new owner off the plate ??

If you transfer the plate onto your car then you send both log books off togeather which i can't see the seller agreeing to, or the plate needs to be on retention.

He would need to transfer the plate to the retention document using his V5 as his car will be need to be reassigned a new/original number and so would his tax, Once this has been done he then gets the retention certificate, He would then post this to you and then you would have a £25 admin fee at your end for for change of ownership, So would work out at £105 all in depending on who is paying the transfer fee.

Okay thanks so much for the excellent advice unfortunatly on this occasion I cant go any further with the purchase off this plate due to the fact that the seller runs a salvage yard and the plate is on one off the cars within, car has the keys. logbook but not the all important mot or tax disc required for the transfer process and due to the age off the car - 1999 jaguar I dont fancy getting it thru an mot and taxing it just to get the plate from it !!

pity !!

Just out of curiosity have you got a link to the sale.........just wondered who was trying to sell a reg number off a non MOT / taxed car.

Best to buy a number already on retention unless you know the seller IMHO

I dont think there is anything dodgy about it, the guy obviously took the car in as salvage and thought he would try make a few quid selling the car / plate. I offered him a price for the plate only and it was only then did he realise like myself that you could not transfer a plate from a car that has no mot or tax.

I doubt very much he didn't know being a dealer that to sell a plate the car needs tax and mot, probably trying it on bud.

A link to even one near that for £138 would be great !!

Did not offer him the full amount as again was only after the plate itself, offered £275 which compared to many on ebay is very, very cheap even given the fact I would have had to pay the full £105 transfer fee !!

Okay guys justa little update, kinda glad it did not work out for the other plate as just a week or so later I have managed to bag a better plate at a bargain price and best off all it is already on retention certificate.

so okay just to confirm as I already have the retention certificate here with me already signed by the previous owner. am I correct in saying that if I now want to assign the plate to my own car I will still have to pay the £25 change off name fee or would this fee only be applicable if I was wanting to keep the plate on the actual retention certificate ??

Both , If you transfer it into your name and put it on the car its £25......and you would also get charged £25 per year to keep it on retention if you dont put it on a car.

DVLA wIll let a plate be removed from a car that isn't taxed or mot'd but it needs to have been taxed or mot'd in the last 6 months if I recall correctly.
