Eastenders - anyone here watch it?
I was round at a friend's house the other evening and his wife had Eastenders on.
Now I don't watch any of the soaps as just don't have the time or the inclination.
Anyway while I was there I saw a bit of the programme. Firstly there was a young daughter drunk and screaming at her mother about an ex boyfriend and some secret her mother knew. Her mother appeared to be getting married, but in the ensuing shouting the daughter ripped up her wedding dress and there was lots of crying and more yelling (and some serious stares from the assembled cast on the fringes of the scene ).
Then we cut to Shane Ritchie's character following his wife/girlfriend to a flat and accusing her of having an affair... more shouting, tears and general unpleasantness!
At this point I and my mate left the room.
I now see that Eastenders was the most watched programme over Christmas and my question is why? The ten minutes I saw was the most depressing TV I have seen in ages and this is supposed to be entertainment.
I am not having a pop at anyone who watches it or any other soap as they are obviously very popuar, but I don't get it!

Yes I watched it and quite enjoyed it. If you want to watch Mrs Brown's Boys, Miranda or some boring quiz show then fine, but not for me.
It's a bit like watching the X factor. No one will admit to actually watching it and we end up with "it was on at my g/f's" posts
Actually some of the Eastender's scripts were remarkably similar to a lively pub I used to visit

Agreed depressing nonsense, but maybe that's the point, reminds you that there are always people worse off than yourself, so maybe in a twisted way cheers people up at Xmas?

It's the same all year round to be fair, the 3 soaps follow each others story lines in one way or another.
I think most people watch it as it makes them feel their life is in a better position than those on the tv shows, I mean who goes to the pub every night and never really leaves the area where they live / work /sleep etc.

We were 'lucky' enough to see the next episode, Mum-in-Law loves it, more shouting and screaming, then watched someone die on Xmas day!

Eastenders being **** is one of my pet subjects.
It is a pretty insidious programme, it is pre watershed so nothing explicit is actually shown but nothing is really off the agenda in terms of subject matter.
Christmas, someone always has to die, at least it wasnt a baby this year.
I hate the way everyone growls at each other, if they arent growling they are shouting and there is very little comedy value in it, Coronation Street used to manage a bit of that but I think its gone the same way, not that I watch them with any regularity, I pick up bits when its on in the same room
I remember watching Eastenders when it first appeared and it seemed a whole lot cheerier back then.

This programme should of gone years ago,i too was at a mates house and his GF had it on,i thought this pile of crap on of a christmas.
Depressing,arguing,drunk,Adultery,Wannabe gangster soap on tv..
And if it were the most watched programme over Christmas,God help us....
Saying that, when i've happened to catch a few moments of the other popular soaps, they are not much better now a days,But EastEnders has to be the worst...

God know, I hate it with a passion, it is a noise, basically a cockney making a growling noise for thirty minutes, she also watches things about horrible, bitchy Amercan housewives who just slag off and confront each other.
How is there ten million people that watch it I will never know.
