'Being raised Catholic is worse than child abuse'
So says Richard Dawkins, and he's right IMHO.
He said he had been told by a woman that while being abused by a priest was a ‘yucky’ experience, being told as a child that a Protestant friend who died would ‘roast in Hell’ was more distressing.

If it is the same abuse he refers to in the book it is sort of light fondling abuse the woman was exposed to as opposed to full on.... well you know the most horrible kind. Because her friend hadn't been baptised she was brainwashed to believe she would burn in Hell, upsetting for a kid. Needs to be read in context in the book.

I don't have the book with me, I library borrowed it, but Dawkins also talks about Hell Houses run by some ultra nutcase christians where young kids around the age of twelve have the holy crap scared out of them by actors dresses as the Devil and similar to enforce the belief that they will burn in Hell if they don't follow the bible and all that shiite. Now if they could put the same energy into stressing the evil of guns..........

Its like anything else really. If you are looking for an excuse for your disbeliefs then you will accept anyone else's views and in your case Dawkins is the perfect chap!

So, Les, as a catholic, you believe it's OK for catholic children to be told that their protestant friends will "roast in hell?"

Just the usual bit of Catholic bashing, just like Americans with guns really, only takes one or two bad ones and everybody suffers because of it.

IMO, because we are used to seeing everything through our own cultural references, we naturally assume that other religions follow the same pattern.
However (in the case of Islam, Judaism and a good number of Christian denominations) they are more "one man and his book".
Anyways, I think we tend to look to the hierarchy of the RCC and the C of E to act in a moral (being religious and all) and responsible way to the moral failings of those within their organisations. There is a difference between religion and the "Church".
I think it is important for people to make this distinction - I am sure that many do, but there seem to be many who can't and amusingly, who think their opinions are worth broadcasting.
