My wife & I spent a week in New York in May. We loved it. Had a really good time.
We stayed in the cheapo Wellington which is where they filmed some of the Borat film!
The hotel was at Times Square which was a pretty good location.
I'd reccommend getting some bus tour tickets. We had two or three loops with hop on hop off for 48 hours. Was worth having that available. Its about 4 miles down to the financial district.
I would definitely recommend a drink at the rooftop bar 230 fifth.

Fantastic views and was nice and chilled.
Obviously you'll be wanting to go up the Empire State building, however I would also recommend going to the top of the Roccafeller. We did this at sunset and then you have a great skyline to look at including the Empire State.
You have to take a trip to carnegie deli which was opposite our hotel:

Proper nice breakfasts & lunches etc.
If you like sports then try and get Yankee tickets if they are playing. We really enjoyed seeing them and we don't know mcuh about baseball.
We had a free tour of the federal reserve bank but I wouldn't bother with that, unless you can pay more for the proper tour when you get to see the gold vault!
For the 911 memorial you have to book your tickets online so google that before you go.
Take a trip out to the Statue of Liberty, and this will also take you to Ellis Island which has quite a large museum which took a while to look round.
We didnt bother getting off at the Statue as theres nothing there really. Took our photos from the boat.
Macys is the biggest department store in the world so worth taking a look if you like shopping. We also went Bloomindales which I thought was really nice.
Make sure you spend half a day walking around in Central Park. The place is Massive!
We also went to the Museum of Natural History which was brilliant if you like that kind of thing.
You'll have a great time I'm sure

We took about 1400 pics lol might post some up later
I forgot to mention the highline. It's the old elevated railway that's been turned into a kind of garden walkway. Well worth checking out if the weathers nice.
We thought the food was reasonable. There's so many restaurants you'll have plenty of choice.
Also if you fancy an hour on the train you can go to Coney Island which we never got round to doing but it was recommended to us

Shake Shack.
http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/ for a look at the aircraft carrier, Concorde, a blackbirds, nuclear submarine and a few other war birds.
We got a New York pass, but there are plenty of other similar cards. You pay for your card upfront and then most attractions are free, often with queue jump facilities.
We stayed at the Hilton Honors Double Tree Suites on Time Square which was an excellent location.

Virgils for food - but huge portions so you need to go when you're really hungry
Check if there's something on at Madison Square Garden when you're there, we went to a basketball game, not a fan but the atmosphere was great and well worth it.
