Default Show Me Your Money - Channel 4

On tonight at 10.

Employers at a plumbing company are all asked to reveal how much salary they earn to each other, cant imagine my company doing that!

Should be interesting viewing.

A few years ago now, we thought there was a disparity of wages between people basically doing the same job and so we had a salary disclosure in the office. No names, but a list of about twenty salaries of employees of equal rank. Quite revealing and very useful at pay review time. You just need one trustworthy person to compile the data and absolute honesty from the participants.

The company hated that type of thing and actually tried to ban it, like its their information If the company is so averse then its got to be good for the employees.

The owner's son earns 120k for 'managing' 5 people earning £18k each ! That seems out of proportion to me.

A perk of being the son of the boss no doubt.......

I want to be a plumber, nearly 100k for some of them
Glad a couple chipped in to up the girl in the canteens wages as she worked hard just to make ends meet, I can't imagine having a fiver left after paying for the essentials.

I couldn't quite work out how much plastic surgery / work that boss had done to his face, looked terrible. I also thought that the whole project failed as in the begining the boss stated he wouldnt be increasing his wage bill, but had to in the end.

I would imagine that the over all atmosphere in the company is now pretty awful, as talking about money / earnings starts to divide people. Like one of the plumbers stated, you knew what your salary was when applying for the job.

The son of the boss was totally over paid, he managed a small team of phone operators. He should of made the point, and been seen to drop his earnings to cover his team salary issues. This drop would of made his team happier and increased respect towards him. Obviously his drop would of been just an act, as the father could then just raised it up again on the quiet.

But, the one big thing that annoyed me, was how much those plumbers obviously over charge customers, to be able to take home £120K a year, and still provide the company profits, must mean that the end customer was paying near £100 an hour !! To clear drains / fit pipes and basically rob you / take advantage of an emergency situation, when you need help.

Listening to the boss, the blokes there, they all sounded like chav's / spiv's and I, for one, will never ever use that company, even if my house was filling with water. The scene in the boss's office, the overall decor, well, he was 100% cheese.

When our business was in its infancy we worked out of offices of an insurance company. Our MD was put in charge of the insurance company pension scheme. This was before email was so widely used and our MD had to fax over to the pension provider proof of earnings of the employees. Our MD being the busy soul that he is put the paperwork on the fax machine and rushed off to do something else.

Of course, left the paper with all the salaries and names for all to see. Most of the lower end staff didn't really care but some of the old hens in the back office went absolutely crazy. One old dear in her late 50s pretty much used every swearword known to man and invented some new ones too. I got caught laughing and had to apologise to her!

I noticed some expensive private no plates on the fleet of vans, that company must charge a fortune. Felt sorry for the cook, earning minimum wage and travelling 2 hours to get to work as well!

What amazed me was that the drain cleaners where earning the most money, even more than the plumbers.

I know it's a dirty job but it can't be that difficult or technical.........not to the 150k mark.

There are people in my place on £2,500 A DAY!!

Contractors, with their own companies .... only paying corporation tax!!

Aston Martin DB9's are a common sight in the Car Park .... there's loads of money out there for those who want it - even Technical Authors are on £3,000 a week.

But we do hire the best of the best - the Manchester United of the Engineering World I guess?

I thought the P. R. manager was a Pratt wanting a £19k wage rise when on £56k. And only offering a measly1k to the cook. Miserable sod.

Yeah they don't make that sort of money using honest methods, it's not so different from 'garders' that charge old people £1000 to mow a lawn.

Most trades have been decimated by the eastern euros, there is no reason plumbing should maintain wages when cheap Poles can do it.

That's different Pete. Your 'contractors' are Specialists in a highly technical and proprietary industry who have spun off there career after 10+ or more years as an employee.

Being a plumber is a commodity job... a trade, like a plasterer or a garden variety electrician.

i remember back in the very early 00's, you had middle class types taking up plumbing saying they could get £50 an hour in london, I even remember something on TV about it with ex-bankers becoming Plumbers!

Then we had the 'boom' and you had loads of money in Banking etc and then Eastern Euro immigration then the bust. I can't imagine how Plumbers are making £££££'s now.

honest tradesman arent making that sort of money unless they are on pre-banking collaspe contracts with lots of overtime and shift work then they could make 50K but they would be on an hourly rate of about £16 per hour (paye) so it needs lots and lots of hours

They get gas qualifications and then make themselves to be seen as highly technical and worth their money.

Hence when you ask a gas engineer/plumber guy to do a boiler swapover which would take no longer than a day max, they come out with some sort of stupid price and then justify what a big job hanging a boiler and fiddling with some pipework really is.

The Eastern Europeans are only levelling the market a little, this way 'real' engineers who can repair a faulty boiler get to keep their jobs and demand the wages they are obviously worth and all the central heating installation monkeys who were making an absolute fortune before the poles came by get to eat a little humble pie hence forcing them to lower their prices a little.

Anyway what is it with everyone getting upset over wage differences? There are plenty of cleaners around hence why they are paid little. Middle and top level managers will be paid more as they generally have more responsibilities and liabilities. Yes, they may be seen to be sitting around doing nothing etc however when lower staff **** up they are the ones who get an ear munching.

As for directors earning £££££'s. Good for them. If one is not happy, set up their own company and deal with all the crap that goes with it.

Not directed at you personally TDW

That's a shocking amount! Hopefully things will improve once the recession is over.

What you earn has always been a private matter and it is wrong to tell them to release that information.
