Default Jobs they are out there!

Been self employed for 6 years now, things have been a bit slow for a while now, so during my usual search for projects etc, came across a job advert so thought looks like it could be different so sent a quick email, that was friday, they said come for a chat (yesterday)today offered the job, does it really happen that quick!! and they want me to start next monday!!

Congrats. Hope it works out for you. Get used to having to book holidays again!

Figures out today say unemployment has fallen. Decent news combined with the drop in inflation and hopefully a drop in debt levels too.

Welldone fella!

Similar to how I got my job.
My girl friend at the time (now wife) used my email for a job search website.
A job role was emailed through. No interest to her, but it seemed to fit me perfectly.

-Sent my CV on the Sunday night
-Got a call Monday morning to go and speak to recruitment agent for the next day
-Interview with agent went well and she got an interview with the company for the next day.
-Had interview at 9am, offered the job and a £2k salary increase than what was advertised, all by 12pm.

It can and does happen if you are motivated.

Kent, South East, or London: yep, the jobs are out there alright......so long as you can afford the season ticket to travel, or to move home and LIVE down there.

About time this, and every government realised that there IS life north of Watford

There are plenty of jobs out there if you are willing to get off your **** and look for them, the problem with allot of people is they expect 50k jobs becuse they are getting so much off the dole. Thats why the polish etc can get the jobs as they expect less and want to work.

Spot on. My Son is at University but he works 4:30pm - 9pm at HMRC and works every other weekend and concert days at Stadium of Light.
He did swank about it on FB. Said something like, thought there were no jobs, I got 2 in a month

Well done Ray T

I thought there were loads out there. Ive recently been made redundant from a 15yr stint at my last place. I got a job pretty quickly, paying peanuts I might add but yes I guess youre right, the jobs are there.

That aside. I'm qualified pretty heavily in so many fields its ridiculous. No matter what job I go for too, I don't even get a reply let alone an interview. I'm fairly well experienced too. Id say there's loads of jobs if you're unskilled. Everything else is being lucky that your CV is top of the pile. For everything else its ****ty agency work I'm afraid.

Dave I know what you mean, my CV is a bit odd, when they see Antarctic explorer, then biomed consultant it does throw them, especially when I started out as apprentice mechanical engineer.

Absolutely no disrespect, but yes there are no doubt many jobs like that about, which are all well and good taking, if you don't need to pay to keep a roof over your head, food on the table etc. A lot of jobs, (all in fact that are offered now at my company-thankfully I got in before that change) are part time temp jobs. Maybe we do expect too much in this country, but the cost of living is what it is, and sadly a low paying job, that may not give full time hours that may not even be permanent is no good to somebody going it alone so to speak. And before anyone wants to jump in about people bettering themselves, there will always be someone at the bottom of the pile, in the situation above, and as for high paying jobs, they are in shorter supply.

Great if luck is on side, for someone like the OP, but that isn't always the case and like Jeff said, places alone will vary in terms of opportunities. That is not to say that there aren't lazy wasters out there, but the whole employment thing isn't all black or white.

Well done Ray!

Sometimes you just have to move to the work. I moved 150 miles away from the family in order to get a decent job.

None taken, Lisa My Sons only option, because of his University commitments meant he could only work part time hours. I don't think he wants to make a career of it, but at least he is earning and not sponging off me. I was only pointing out, that unlike a lot students, he is working as well as studying and it did not take much hard work for him to find these jobs. His aim for a career lies in the Police Force, so I doubt he will stay with HMRC, we shall see.

I'm looking for a part-time job at the moment after being made redundant from a good, well-paid(ish) job in March. I am finding it really hard to find anything which will pay for my childcare and petrol to get there! I cannot take a minimum wage job, so leaves things pretty narrow for me. Applied for loads, but not even got an interview with an agency!

This is what I was getting at. It probably is easy to get a job, if it's just a part time one to bring a bit money in while not having all the responsibilities that come once leaving education. I too, got a job easily while studying. My first was only temporary when I was doing my A-Levels, but when that one ended it was only a fairly short time until I found another. Good on him for not sitting sponging off you, and I wasn't meaning to sound funny in anything I said.

This is what I was getting at. Depending on circumstances, it's not always easy to walk in to a job. Good luck with the search.

My company is looking for experienced (and that is the sticking point) high hazard, oil and gas process safety, pressure vessel inspection and integrity management engineers. At present, there are more vacancies than people, especially in Aberdeen!

No, expecting a decent full time job is not too much to ask, surely that must be a national aspiration, not the part time, low wage, low skill economy we seem to be heading too

My misses was with her last company for 6 years, loved the job and was scared if she moved she wouldn't like it.

I contacts a recruitment firm that specialised in her subject and within two weeks she was offered a role at 10k more because of her experience.

She loves it and (although it was a risk) is so grateful I pushed her to progress.

I myself in 6 years have progressed applying internally within the same company, lived through two "restructures" and am now on almost three times the money I started on.

As above, its about drive and commitment.

I was meaning, maybe we expect too much in terms of standard of living. Few people now would want to go without things that could still be considered luxuries. My point was at times we may need to, but even full time, not so good jobs are hard to come by, and someone responsible for keeping a roof over their head, can't realistically get by on a part time, temp, minimum wage job.

I work in a low paid, low skilled job, and to be totally honest, it may not be what I saw myself doing but I'm not ashamed of it. I work bloody hard at what I do and I am not living a life sponging off the government and other hard working people out there. But even 'crap' jobs like mine are proving difficult to come by. In response to this thread, of course there are jobs out there, but they are no good if a person can't do them, or if they don't provide a living wage.

Lisa. I know what you are saying and totally agree. My Son was lucky I guess, HMRC gave him training. It is not exactly the most taxing (sorry) job in the world, but the pay is much more than minimum wage. He is doing ok for the hours he is working.
Some Companies take the pee with this minimum wage milarky. It is meant to prevent people being taken for mugs yet seems to have been used as a tool to not pay people a sensible rate for a good job done.

We've got vacancies for Linux engineers at all levels – it’s a struggle to get CV’s in, never mind get to interview stage.
