It is certainly an impressive sight. Its interesting how it appears to go horizontal in the latter stages of the launch.
One of the things that made me think was standing next to one of those rockets and being forced to admire NASA ability to get one of those things to work comparatively reliably for a trip to the moon and back when you consider its vast size and complexity.

Indeed they did. Atlas is primarily used for payload delivery, for example, the one jods saw was probably item "30" on the list [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlas_V[here[/url]. Page also mentions a "crew-rated" version of the Atlas, which is possibly where the Shuttle thing comes into play as I have a feeling this was meant to be the shuttle replacement, and may still be, but think it's early stages
