Spanish PAYG Sim
Hi All
Taking the family to Menorca at the end of summer & would like to know if anyone can recommend a spanish 3G PAYG sim for me to use the Ipad & iphones whilst we are there.
I know our phones are ok to use abroad with current providers, but want to use the ipad as sat nav or the wifes iphone as they are open to any sim & do not want to eat into any 'package' we have here incase they take the pee and get a massive bill upon our return.
I know its not a massive island & i have been before, but would rather just take the ipad - wife's not to good at map reading & she will be looking after the little lad in the back, so best to just let me get on with it
Ive seen a few on egay, but they asking for passport numbers etc?
or is it best to just buy a PAYG when i get there & top it up?
Anyone done this or can recommend a network/sim i would appreciate it

I use a sim from Masmovil, picked it up in a phone store, they did need passport number, data is 8 Cents a Megabyte.
The settings to enable internet on your iPad are here http://www.unlockit.co.nz/mobilesett...ngs.php?id=197
I had to call Masmovil to enable Internet on the Sim.

Both of those are probably a better idea, I think the rules changed last year and now the shops are more strict on handing them out to tourists. You might also have to cut the sim to fit as they don't usually stock micro sims.

btw, i have download the app - 'menorca offline maps' what this is/would be like i have no idea! perhaps it would work as it wants to use my current location when you open the app

i have no idea about about any i phone app besides google maps.
I have used google maps on my n8 in the uk and it runs very well but needs a constant data connection so would be VERY pricey solution

Copilot for iPhone has all the maps on it and does not require data connection, if that's priced a bit too much for your pocket take a look at Skobbler for iPhone/iPad. It's a free satnav app and if you want the maps on the device (ie does not require data connection) its just a couple of quid

I have a Yoigo pay as you go spanish sim which I use for data when I am in spain for work or holiday, works fine with no hassle.
I also have a Orange Spain PAYG simcard which I use for voice calls. Using this sim is much cheaper to phone the UK than using a payphone or your own UK simcard.
To get a payg sim, simply go to a shop once you are on the island, its straightforward but can be complicated to get one. After the Madrid train bombings all PAYG cards must have a traceable route back to the user, so expect the shop to photocopy your passport, its normal practice and without it the phone network will not activate the sim. The same process is followed by locals, so its not just tourists that have to go through this.
