Default Passport Expiry

We are due to go to the Canaries in July and have just noticed my daughters (age 7) passport runs out in October. Ive read all the guff about it being not recommended to travel with less than 6 months of validity left but has actually anybody done it? Surely a 10 year (5 for kids) should last 10 years and not 9 1/2?

Why is it NOT alright outside the EU?
Surely if a passport expiry date says 05/05/2012, then that's when it expires, NOT 05/12/2011?

Does new one start from 05/05/2012 or when they issue it?

It's a recommendation (not a rule) in case you become ill on holiday and ensures you still have a valid passport to travel home on. The 6 months was a figure plucked from thin air I am led to believe

£77.50/ adult, £49/ child. Plus photos, and if required the Post Office check and send £8/ if you're an idiot.

Aye, don't use the Post Office, they don't guarantee anything, just rip you off. £8 for two minutes' work

Renewal is dead easy, read the form.

It'll start from when they issue it, but they will give you additional credit (of up to 9 months) for time left on the old passport... so you don't lose the 6 months (or whatever) if you do renew early.

I've just sent off mine and the wife's for renewal, and applied for my daughters first passport, all at the same time - not a cheap experience!

I believe this rule of thumb came about because of the visa that the country you are travelling to is willing to issue you. For example you cant travel to a place that only grants you 3 months visa when you have 2 month on your passport. Something like that anyway.

Ha . We just got back back from Zambia ( via Joburg to see friends ) .

Girlfriends family cam across border from Zim all on etr's accept her mum . When it came time for them to return guard noted the youngest had outstayed his visa by 2 days .( 19, and hes never been abroad)
The family were due on bus to Bulawayo from Vic falls at half past 7 am and this guy was being a c**t , made him start filling in forms so they could lock him up
We called up the women we stayed with ( she has 10 guesthouses ) and as we gave up and hope and set off to drive across the bridge Takunda opened the back door ( whilst moving) and we were off
This guard kept us sweating if he been on his own he'd presumably taken cash , as it was threats worked
