Default AA vs RAC vs Green Flag??

Think it's time I got some kind of recovery cover as I'm doing about 25k a year at the mo.

Don't need european but would like a decent level of cover so if I break down a couple of hundred miles away from home, I'm not just gonna get a lift to the nearest garage.

Any recommendations on who's better out of the 3 big names?

If you join the Civil Service Motoring Association (£10-ish) you get a discount with Britannia. If you're not an ex-civil servant just say you did some Post Office work years ago. dl

Almost the same from RAC.

Anyone bought from the guys outside the supermarkets? Thought you might get a better deal?

Nice one! Just checked with my bank and they offer the full monty AA cover if I upgrade my account which costs £25 a month but comes with a load of other stuff, including travel insurance and mobile phone cover for two phones!

Might just go for that option!

Default Home start

Be careful who you use as some of the companies 'Home Start' policies are quite limited. Some companies are just what it says - Home Start - if your car starts that's it done - no use if your clutch has gone or water pump goes.

I'm in cornwall and was with the RAC for 17 years (full membership - Relay Recovery Home Start and so on) and had used them twice, my Lancia broke down at home and they could not repair it so I asked to be towed to Enginetuner - the RAC refused - when you break down at home they will only tow a maximum of ten miles (20 miles or so to Enginetuner) from your home address so they left me to it.

I asked the RAC because I have a Subaru and the Missus has a Honda and same thing - no reputable/main dealer close enough so would be stuck.

This was 3 years ago and all the leading companies except the AA were the same but I think Britannia and Greenflag have revised there policies.

Something to think about if you live away from town

Owning a subaru I have never had to call the rac in over 9 years. When I was into vauxhalls I was on first name terms with the breakdown drivers.

I went with this one: http://www.quotelinedirect.co.uk/breakdown/?INRN

£59 all in for a year including European cover, the breakdown service is actually Mondial Assist which is what Subaru UK use for you free breakdown cover with your new Scoob.

Anyway MoneySavingExpert is your man: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/ins...dside-recovery

I was chatting to AA customer services recently and they said that had a scheme where they promise to fix/replace any major part that packs up for free for around £80 per annum. Obviously didn't include wear and tear items like exhausts/tyres but it did cover batteries for example.

It did seem a pretty good deal and I wondered what the catch was as parts are so expensive these days. Anyone know more?

AA. £28 per month for both of us. Home Start, Recovery, Roadside, they'll pay £500 towards repairs if away from home, covered for any car we're in whether a driver or passanger, overnight stay.

Only called them out 3 times in 10 years. Never had a problem, customer service during a breakdown was great with constant contact and updates on how long they would be (never waited more than 45 minutes), and car fixed at the roadside each time.

I got offered this a few years ago and the condition I remember is that the car has to be less than 3/5 years old?

i pay £16 a month for my current account with barclays.

part of it is the maxed out break down service. Used to be with green flag, now swwitched to RAC.

Green flag i can't fault one bit, they trailered me back from the isle of mann lol
RAC can't be faulted either, used em a few times and always arrived in a reasonable time and helped out.
