The fall of the pizza...and the rise of the pizzer
Has it happeed in YOUR town yet?
Well it has here.
Five years ago we had a BRILLIANT Italian restaurant and several GOOD pizza takeaways. All Italian owned.
At the Italian, from the moment you walked in you could smell garlic cooking. Hell, you could smell it from OUTside.
At the takeaways, garlic was on every pizza unless you requested none.
NOW: The restaurant got taken over, it is no longer OWNED by Italians, it's owned by some English lass, and the food is bland. You cannot smell garlic INSIDE, let alone outside.
The takeaways are all Asian owned, no Italians. No Garlic seems to be used and if you ASK for it, they flood the pizza with garlic butter AFTER cooking it.
I used to LOVE Italian...........

We are lucky because we still have a proper Italian restaurant in the next door town. It only has about 5 tables with 4 chairs per table. The Italian chef who also brings out the food to you looks a bit like Al Pachino. His missus takes the order to begin with. She is a very strict person. Just one look from her means you can't cross her. Anyhow, their menu might be very short, but food is damn good.

We have http://www.chilli-jacks.co.uk/ nearby, they are awesome, not too expensive, friendly, food always hot and tasty, delivery is rapid and I believe the Pizza is pretty good.
My favourite is done at home, bread maker for the base and then stick what I fancy on.

We have a local delivery place still run by Italians, so we are lucky.
I cannot understand a word they say but all of them are real gents and such good fun.
We put in an order the other night for all of us, both our boys being home. Our youngest has just bought an Alfa Mito QV. Delivery guy was all "Bellisimo!!!" and gave us our £45 order for free.
Their pizzas are the best ever and garlic is cooked into the tomato sauce used and especially ino the pesto the misses has on her one.
Perfect.

There will be places, precious little gems of places that are known by WOM only. Unfortunately, some of the better food I've had has been in rather less than up-market establishments (e.g. you're welcome to bring your own beer) Also helps if you live in a city and can try places lunchtimes...

Been like it for years round us. All of the Pizzas places by me aren't Italian owned (mostly Bangladeshi), not that it makes any difference except some don't do pork based toppings, but regardless of the missing pork, the fact is those who do run them can't make a pizza. And yet everyone who lives round here doesn't have a clue what a pizza should be like and carries on buying them. So the ones that aren't money laundering fronts still trade and clearly make a good living as they are still running and still selling crap.
All are using ready-made bases that are no better than the cardboard box it came in, and then littered with shyte that came stright from plastic tubs of ready-made toppings. Everything brought in, nothing made fresh on site. And just dumped on a conveyor belt oven to cook.
If I want mass produced shyte, I'll get a pizza from the supermarket....which more often than not actually tastes better. Even though its still a far cry from a fresh made pizza with a base made on the spot and freshly made toppings all done as it is ordered. Then cooked in a proper oven (even better a wood fired oven).
