Importing RS Cosworth

Importing RS Cosworth
Hi guys,
Not getting much response from other forums so thought i'd come back to my most trusted car site.
I'm looking to import a cossie from a friend in Asia, the car has been sat up for over 10 years and after years of asking him to sell it to me he's given in.
Obviously the car being sat for so long isn't perfect as i think the tree sap has eaten into the lacquer so would require a full respray. It also has a leak, i believe coming from the sunroof which has made the rear passenger footwell wet. I'm wondering what it be better to get the work done over there or in the UK?
I'm guessing if the car isn't working and looks like it does I possibly wouldnt get taxed a lot? I'm totally unsure how much the tax would be to import a car so i'm just thinking of ways I could save money as i'm not sure what other expenses I would need to get it running again, worse comes to worse, break it apart.
If anyone could give me any help i'm be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Phil

Easiest way to ship it over is by RoRo. There are a lot of MK1 & MK2 Escorts lads that are importing at the mo from Oz & NZ etc. They will have all the information that you need.

If import in its current condition, i think it would be better. As the actual value of the car is scrap value. I would phone one of the jap parts importers, to see how & what to declare.

Totally depends on what it is exactly. As a previous owner of saff cissies, I can tell you that there's no such thing as a cheap cossie.
If its a saff, forget it straight away. There are so many usable examples out there for £4k upwards and proper concourse quality for 6-8k nowadays, it's not width the aggro of shipping, tax, insurance issues -(as an import) plus the water leak you mention could be terminal if it's been sat for ten years with water in it. Better putting your money into an already good car!
If this import needs £2k spending for a respray plus a probable engine rebuild and it's just a money pit!
However, if it's an rs500..........

I know of someone with a couple of mint XR2s (Mk1 & Mk2) and a Sapphire Cosworth which are all just sitting in his warehouse. Is there a big demand for these?

Well worth checking with the Customs, it may well be that they will charge you tax and VAT based on the price that you pay the owner for the car. The worse its condition when they see it, the cheaper the tax etc.

As RMJ25R says Sapphires are still cheap and plentiful, though that will eventually change, as useable cars are getting broken for parts all the time
