Default lights for a mountain bike

Speculative question really.

Looking for a good set of lights for my MTB, front and rear if possible.

Dont want to spend too much, max £40ish brand new or 2nd hand.

Recommendations please.

THANKS

Thinking outside the box slightly, you might do better in terms of lumens-per-buck getting two sets of slightly cheaper lights (2x front + 2x rear) from somewhere like a supermarket or ebay*. Slightly more faffing about to fit, but on the other hand you won't need worry so much about getting the absolute best kit at the price.

* TK Maxx were selling sets with a slimline spotlight style front and compact rear light at silly cheap prices before the holidays.

aint life peculiar -- i've just come form 'the ,bay' after looking for lights for my NEW hybrid..

need to do some research - how many led's/rechargeable/solar powered etc !!!!

I can the 'accessories' costing nearly as much as the bike !! ( bit like owning a Scooby -- another money-pit)

I can imagine -as I have just been looking, the accessories could cost a bomb.

Dont really care about the led/rechargable etc. I only want to ensure I am 'seen' at night.

I'm not a serious MTB'er, just 1 hour in the evening on the road - just a fitness / lose some weight type of thing

Cheers

same here -- which is why I went for a hybrid; it's the first NEW bike I have ever owned, so might pamper it (went off-road for the first time yesterday - got home and washed it off with hose; wiped it down with an old towel; looked at it for a few seconds, thinking "shall I get the hair-dryer and finish it off .." ) (I didn't tho')

Depends whether you want to be able to see on dark roads or just be seen, the latter is easy, the former get more expensive.

As a brand I use cats eye on my hybrid. Served me fine through this winter so far, fairly reasonable in price generally too.

Get a rechargable light unless you have rechargeable batteries as a good light will rinse power quickly. My moon will drain its battery in less than 2 hours on full power.

A bit out of the budget but this is the biggest I could find without recourse to diving lights etc...
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/sterops...-battery-14534

OTOH, I got one of these or something similar...
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/ultrafi...2-cr123a-16179

Plus this mount: http://www.dealextreme.com/p/univers...diameter-31871

You'd also need batteries and a charger...

Try to pick a charger with a UK plug...

For rear light I got a Smart Lunar 1 watt...

Little brother's got this:

Whats wrong with a white torch for the front and a red one for the rear. Can't be that expensive surely.

+1

I worked out the other day that I've managed to spend over £300 on lights. I need good ones though as I do miles down completely unlit country lanes and need to see as well as be seen.

Front:
Hope Vision 1
Hope Vision 2

Rear
Hope District 3
Cat Eye LD1100

Cheap lights are either not bright enough or are bright but use batteries to fast or are bright and OK on batteries but don't work when they get wet. First time I fell off my bike I broke my cheapo Halfrauds light. I have since fallen off many times and my moon light still works. Also watch out for cheapo brackets.

Yeah I've used Dealextreme, bought a revised Magicshine for my brother last Christmas (2010...). Seems the "generics" are getting lower on price.

Best advice I've seen is to have two reasonable lights. Or a bike light and a headlight. Main issue with any of the torches is run time if used on full power. That's where the bike specific units are far better.

Using the velcro strap mount on mine the torch is held quite tightly against the rubber block. Plus I loop the lead/cord around the front reflector or cycle computer mount just in case.

How do you manage to keep falling off it?

Do you think you are not suited to riding a bike?

I have to admit I had a similar problem when I was first riding motor bikes. Fell off every one I owned.

I am a bit better at it now thank goodness.

Should have got a road bike

Magicshine are good, although a battery on one of mine doesn't seem to last long now. I can't see anything for £40 being any good at all.

This is only a little bit over budget but its the same front light I have and is a bargain at that price. Ideally you want one of these

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/moon-x-power...e-front-light/

you could spend more than a decent bike costs on lights if you try hard enough.

If your looking to spend that sort of money, then you're better off seeing troutie aka chris.

I have one of his first liberators, it's the blue one on his site.

2100 lumens full 1000 low, 3/6 hours runtime from a 4 cell pack.

Pretty much defeats most lights out there.

A friend had the lupine betty, anyway my trout pretty much flooded hers right out lol.
