Default Paypal - Charge-backs?

Just before Christmas I sold an old laptop on ebay that had a few issues. It was sold as spares but unfortunately I cocked up when I listed it and didn't un-tick the box that said 'Returns Excepted'.

Even though the fault was clearly stated, the winning bidder wants to return the laptop.
So I have refused as the fault was clearly stated, so his fault.

He then put a charge back for what he paid through paypal. I had no choice but to clear my account as I needed to use Paypal over Christmas.
Since this the customer has returned the laptop and now wants refunding for what this cost him as well.

Up until yesterday, Paypal hadn't contacted me at all, so a good 20 days since they agreed the charge back.

Now, they have contacted me saying that I must refund the money.
This is slightly confusing as the money has already been taken from my account??

What the hell do I do?
It is not a lot of money, only around £100 but I am buggered if I am paying it twice.

Any suggestions?

If your credit card is listed with them I think they go that route, either that or they'll try to take from your bank.

As a seller on eBay and PayPal you never win the argument, oh, and they take ages to action stuff as well.

No credit cards listed on there, only bank accounts.
Basically, the charge back resulted in my paypal account having a debit amount on it which had to be paid before I could use it. So I just paid it.
My paypal account is now in the black, but their request is still saying that I will be charged for the refund.

In other words, I have paid back the money that I got from the buyer, to paypal.

Does that make it a bit clearer?

Oh you mean the postage? I know when I returned something many moons ago I had to obtain proof of postage, but I wasn't offered the cost of that back.

So I am not sure where you stand now.

No, not the postage.

I'll start again:

- I sold a laptop on ebay for around £100.
- Buyer emailed me 1 day after receiving it to say he wasn't happy and wanted to return it.
- Before we could agree on anything he issued a charge back through paypal
-I contacted him asking what the hell was going on.
-He agreed to return it
-Mean time, I needed to use my paypal account. The charge back issued by paypal had left me with a minus figure of £98.00 on Paypal. I had to clear this before I could use Paypal again. I did so using my current account.
-I received laptop
-Customer wanted £12.20 he spent shipping it back
-I agreed but this morning Paypal are asking me if I am going to issue a refund for the laptop??? Which I already have done.
-It also says that the buyer must prove that he has returned the item, so may be they are just a bit behind.

There is no way they would charge me twice is there?

I don't think they are that stupid. Sounds to me they are just slow, you can prove you refunded him so I don't think you need worry, but to be sure you could include the refund transaction details in future correspondence to PayPal

PayPal screw buyers as well. I ordered a phone case from a company called case addict.com and paid using PayPal that was on 20 th December. I received nothing by new year so tried contacting the company. Ia email and phone which had been disconnected.
I contacted PayPal first. Ia email which was useless then on phone and they told me I can't apply for a refund until 28days after purchase and will not budge.
PayPal are a disgrace in my opinion.

You haven't actually refunded the buyer. What happens is PayPal have taken your money (or the sellers money depending on how you look at it) and put it a 'holding' account. When things have been sorted out between you and the buyer, they 'release' it - either to you or the buyer depending on the result....

It is all very complicated - e.g. - buyer says item is faulty, and returns it for a refund. You receive item back, check it and found it is not faulty ( RTFM - Read the F***ing Manual). on this basis you can refuse to give a refund, returning it to the buyer once again !!

Hope that makes some sense
