Statute of limitations?
Just seen on the news, that the CPS/ police are looking to prosecute Chris Huhne & his Mrs for the sppeding points row...
Now the offence took place in 2003...I thought the statute of limitations on a crime was 6 years, so this would render this debacle invalid?
If thats the case why are the CPS ? bib carrying on with it?
sureley they can make beter use of resources???
Or is it the usual party line, "we will spend whatever is neccesery to bring crims to justice yadda yadda" yawn

There is no statute of limitations for "criminal" offenses in the UK, AFAIK. The CPS/police would not be looking to prosecute if there were the length of time after which you couldn't be prosecuted you mention. Even they are not that dense!

You have to bear in mind also that the offence in this case would be perverting the course of justice, which is a far more serious crime than the original speeding (punishable by up to 2 years in jail depending on circumstances, against 3 points and a £60 fine).

Edit: Jail time can be much more than 2 years, even if no coercion or intimidation of witnesses is involved.

As for your first sentence, then start by hassling your Mp to get the justice system to actually gaol offenders instead of a slap on the wrist.

Unless there's reasonable evidence/proof, any decent brief will get him off with a "I don't recall". His word vs hers unless there's a front facing camera view of the driver or similar.
There surely must be "something" otherwise they wouldn't bring the charge.

Did the story not mention emails and recordings made of phone conversations?
