Can I use a remote iTunes library with an iPad?
Ok - noob question here with iTunes & iDevices....
I am considering buying an iPad primarily to use as a 'jukebox' touch flow interface for the lounge, connected to my Amp.
My main question is can you set an iPad to use a remote iTunes music library stored on a NAS box or similar?
I know you can do this in iTunes itself on a PC.
Obviously I have a much larger music library than what can be locally stored on a iPad itself, hence the question.

Hmmmm - OK looked into this home sharing thing.... it appears that having a NAS is a waste of time... you cannot get an ipad to use a remote library directly.
I will need to have a full PC/MAC running iTunes on all the time to do this - using an apple App called 'Remote'..... didn't really want a full PC humming away 24/7.... kind of defeats the object, might as well have a laptop on the side instead of a nice iPad.

Yep - thats what I thought - but a NAS iTunes server IS NOT iTunes......
To use Home Sharing (the only way) it has to be the full iTunes proggy.
Lots of moans on various apple forums about this NAS stuff..... and lack of streaming support.

I thought there were 'Other' music management programs available, I know you don't need to use iTunes any more so I guess there must be. iTunes works a charm for me so I've never looked. Someone must have.

What about a NAS for the tunes, then a Sonos Zoneplayer 90 (£280) connected to your amp, and then you can use a free Sonos app to control the music, you still have all your iTunes playlists etc.
I'm kinda heading down this route as I want to buy more Sonos kit and have music streamed around the house.

I don't know, you download a specific Sonos app from the appstore (works on Android as well), I've downloaded it to see, but it won't work without the Sonos kit, which I haven't got yet.
TBH, I don't care about the art and stuff, I just want to stream the music.
You can also buy the Sonos iphone/ipod dock and it will recognise that, meaning you can plug your phone in and play music from that source if you don't have a NAS, or the pc is off.
I've just bought the dock, zoneplayer and a play 3 speaker from Amazon, I have been umming and erring for a couple of months, finally taken the plunge! Not cheap, but what I want, and I wanted to play most of the music thru my Onkyo amp and Kef speakers, the play 3 speaker is for another small room.
It's my Christmas pressie :-)
Anyhoo, I think it's going to do what I want
