Life on another planet outside our Solar System? Only a matter of time, 600 light years to find out!

Fascinating.

What's more interesting is that if there was life on the planet and if we could observe it from this range, we'd be looking at their state of development 600 years ago. In other words, if they were advanced and looking at us they would see us pimping around 1200AC style!

I wonder what the religious stance will be if they ever do find life on other planets.

But haven't we only been emitting man made radiation for, say 100 years? So we have another 500 years of Stealth before they find us

Regarding the religious element - we could ask God if there is life on Kepler 22B, he would know of course

Unless they've (I'm a believer ) employed the same technique as us, of course.

That's a nice thought. Especially if all they wanted was a cuddle.

What worries me is the idea of a higher form of intelligent life treating us the way we treat other animals. They might want to put us in sheds like cows and eat us. Which would be sh*t.

If there was life in this planet and at a similar stage to us - could we see them and vice versa?

Is it likely that we may find life on another planet but have no means of actually getting there? Sort of waving through the telescope at each other?

And more importantly will Slartybartfast have designed the Fjords again and will the mice take their rightful place as our rulers?

A lot of experts say that if extra-terrestrial civilizations followed the same path as we have in moving from analog to digital broadcast and communication transmission technologies, the 'window of opportunity' for them to detect us and vice-versa is actually pretty small, because digital uses so much less power and as a result is far less likely to be detectable from long distances. We'll have taken barely a hundred years or so to go from the first mass-broadcast analog to entirely digital systems, by the time the last developing country in the world switches to their equivalents of freeview TV and radio, so that's just a hundred years when our signals would be detectable from a long way outside the solar system. Unless of course we deliberately start transmitting high-power analog signals straight out into the void, just on the off-chance they'll one day be picked up.

With currently available propulsion methods, there isn't a hope in hell we could go and visit any ET civilization, if and when we detected one.
