Correct, not in the UK at least. You occasionally see vintage ones on Ebay but that's pretty much your only legal option these days. I hate ethanol thermometers too.

Amazing. You can't buy a barometer or thermometer with mercury but the dentist will still fill you mouth full of it ... anybody would think that mercury amalgam makers had a disproportionate pull in the corridors of power over barometer makers ...
I've still got some mercury vacuum gauges for balancing the carburettors on my (motor)bike. Not managed to poison myself in the, what must be, 30 years since I bought them....

Yup, the Eeeeeee-*******-yewwww have banned the sensible, practical, constructive and no sensible alternative use of mercury (see EU to ban traditional barometers) and yet they FORCE us to install Mercury Death Tubes (AKA CFLs) in every single room of our homes in order to save a few penguins (or is that polar bears?)!!!
Meanwhile our very own, paid for out of YOUR taxes, Environment Agency are doing every thing that they can to enforced these "rules"... see partway down.
