considering apple had over 90% of the market when they started, they're losing quite quickly to android....

Those figures seem it bit out of date. Last quarter up to Sept 2011, Android had over 50% world market share, in some parts of the world Android had nearly 80% market.

More and more manufacturers are starting to use Android.
