Default Popcorn hour/media streamers

Talk to me about the Popcorn hour unit and media streamers in general.

As far as I understand it - I Purchase the popcorn hour, sort out high speed wireless link from pc to Popcorn hour then I can use the PH remote to select and play films on my tv, right? (tell popcorn to look in my movies folder)

I understand that you can fit a HDD inside the popcorn hour but that would mean transferring all the films on to that drive rather then just streaming from the pc, the only advantage of this I can see is that the PC does not have to be switched on to view the movies?

Am I about correct on my thinking?

Cheers,
The Hoff

ok thanks!

Any advise on which wireless setup to go for (make, speed, any other important factors) ....I am delving into unknown territory here.

Does the PH have a wireless reciever and I just need the hub connected to my PC?

How about this one.... Scan Computers UK: Asus WL-520gC 125 Broad Range Wireless Router inc EZSetup

What Mbps should I be aiming for?

You can't stream HD with G and you'd be borderline with G+ depending on your circumstances, for HD you really need N. If you've no HD, G/G+ will do fine.

If you don't want to go wireless, look into 200meg powerline, much less hassle.

Scan Computers UK: D-Link DIR-635 RangeBooster N 650 Wireless Router with 4 Port Switch 300Mbps

Yes it will be streaming 720p HD movies, I am guessing the one above would suffice?

you'll also need wireless for the other end. Popcorn doesn't have but I'm not sure if it takes USB wireless adapters like some do.

if not, it'll have to be:

Popcorn |--wired-->| Wireless access point |~~wi-fi~~>| Host

Grrrr, I thought this was gonna be easy!

I have a cable point down stair by the TV so could put the cable modem there with the wireless router and have the Popcorn hooked directly into that and then use the PC's wireless card to stream back to the Popcorn, not sure my current wireless card in the PC is rated for a fast enough transfer rate so may end up having to buy one for that as well.

A more simple solution would be to buy a HHD for the Popcorn and fill it from the PC before transferring it over I think.

Ding!

Or just get a small USB drive and shuttle it back and forth, cheap, neat and no security concerns.

No, too expensive/gig, get a disk
dabs.com - External Hard Drives products at great prices from dabs.com

I've got a couple of these and quite handy with the connector built in:
dabs.com - Freecom ToughDrive 2.5" 250GB USB2 (29409)

I have tried a wireless usb adapter on my popcorn hour with no luck. I then checked the settings and its only for wired setups. There is a newer version of the popcorn hour out now and that might support it ??? I find it easier to add a drive to my pc and copy all the media I want to that, the popcorn hour has no problem with external drives
