It's par for the course with many corporates to check out applicants. We use facebook, linked in, twitter etc etc.
Easy to weed out people who are associated with Apple products, caravans, council estates etc

Cant see any great things for facebook TBH. Unless like some that use it as an excuse to be "friends" with others so can easily see what they are doing - without been a real friend and asking them

Some of us have friends that live in other countries or just plain far away enough that we don't see them every day. It's a great way to stay in contact with everyone.

I joined up logged on and saw the option to "poke" somebody and have never been back since, plus if I want anybody to know what I am doing I will call,text or email them.
