I would call it unfortunate not disgraceful.. I doubt they wanted to kill it but I am sure they had no other option.

Polar bears will track humans as a food source. I think I read while back they are the only animal that will actively pursue humans in this way. A brown bear will typically avoid human contact, although will attack if startled or if it or its cubs are threatened, but the polar bear will seek out humans for food, attacking and killing them.
I guess as the ice melts and more polar bears are forced onto land, reports of polar bear attacks are likely to increase.

No way that you can blame a wild animal for the way it reacts in it's own territory.

Have to question was this expedition a bit daft -I mean with the number of double barrelled names mentioned it appears to be a private school summer camp convention that failed to do a proper risk assesment. Having said that, I wonder what protection the Top Gear team had against polar bears...guard on night watch shifts?

The irony being that it was some sort of conservationalist wannabe expedition that resulted in the killing of a animal they are trying to 'protect' by averting climate change.

Was from Eton, I think they probably just do as they please, all ruddy faced boys own adventure stuff, health and safety being for the lower orders.

A few had been "climbing in Afghanistan" earlier.... and thought this would be less dangerous.
