A thing of beauty and potential world destruction all rolled into one
Taken on its first public display after being made airworthy back in 2008:
Would have loved to see the tailgunner's view of that (there was a guy sitting in the tail gun when I got a close up shot of the Lancaster) :

Many years ago I saw two Vulcans doing a scramble at the Finningley Airshow..
.....awesome doesn`t come near. The noise was amazing and the ground shook like you wouldn`t believe!!! Hope they can keep XH558 airworthy for years to come.

How many Vulcans were built, anybody know? Wikipedia is too complicated for me
But it does say on there that they have enough funds to guarantee its participation at the Olympics opening ceremony
The Vulcan at Saarfend airport is looking very sorry for itself these days

I heard a figure of around 65 mk 1's and mk 2's,I am not sure if that included counting the original ones with the straight leading edge wings. I believe that most of them were to a large extent hand built at Short's. Spare parts for them often had to be hand fitted to the individual aircraft.
They corrode very quickly when they are left outside in the weather

Heads up BBC1 tonight at 19.00
"The last flying Vulcan will feature prominently in a new documentary to be shown on BBC One on Sunday evenings. 'Britain's Hidden Heritage' explores fascinating projects that typify British endeavour and achievement. Journalist John Sergeant visited XH558's new home at Robin Hood Airport near Doncaster and flew beside the aircraft with the Blades aerobatics team, fulfilling what he called 'a childhood dream'. The Vulcan is featured in the first programme of the series, which will be broadcast at 19:00hrs this Sunday 14th August"

I can only relate what I was told when I started flying them, maybe that was the total of the remaining ones when Skybolt was cancelled.
Anyway, you may well jeer at my error but you have not had the unforgettable experiences that I have had.

Saw it at Doncaster Airport, what an awsome piece of kit, just seen it on TV, sounded awesome. Pity I was at work on the day it flew.

[quote=Jamie;10186073]Did not jeer just stating facts chap
Poor choice of smilie then, no reason why you can't quote the facts, its just the way that you do it which counts.
