I hate AVForums...
Sometimes you just wish you'd never looked.
All set to buy a plasma telly, Panasonic TX-P50VT30B to be precise. Now this is Panasonic's top of the range telly so you'd hope it would be nigh on perfect. There have been a few reviews I've read, including What HiFi which say this is one of the best panels on the market at the moment. Great
So within ten minutes of reading this thread on AVForums http://www.avforums.com/forums/plasm...-part-3-a.html and I'm expecting a TV with green blobs on the screen, finger prints or dirt on the inside of the glass, fluctuating brightness issues, a horrendous buzzing noise whenever it's on, and perhaps several other faults Is it really the case or are the folk on these forums just nit picking at what are essentially minor issues
Would be okay if we weren't talking about an expensive set. I now not sure whether to go for it or not. That said I'm sure all the alternatives also have there own sets of issues?
Went through the same trauma when I bought my 32" Sony CRT years ago. There were reports of that suffering from these rolling horizontal bands, thought my set was okay but then noticed it after a year or so, and once you spot these things that are suddenly more noticeable. Ultimately it was a very good TV and that issue aside the picture quality is really good, still watching it to this day and it's the panel that is going to replace it.

It's like any specialist forum though... for instance read through here and you would think Scoob engines are the least reliable things on the planet (which in the case of the hatch STI they probably are).
Seriously though enthusiasts will always pick up on the minutest of details and every model of anything no matter how good will have 'some issues' and there will always be the odd example with a problem while the 1000 other good ones never warrant a comment.
I wouldn't worry about it, get it bought with a good warranty and you will be a happy man!

From past experience i think people just like to find things to moan about - must be in our british genes or something! At the end of the day, you can pick and pull something to death, and you'll always find faults if you are hell bent on looking for them - the telly your looking at looks mint, and panasonic are one of the best out in the business - ignore the moaning old fckers and go and get it, you'll love it!

F1-Fan has it bang on the nose!
AVforums is actually a pretty **** forum in my opinion and try to avoid it although i do like the movie review section.
PS. All Panasonic Plasmas have always buzzed(even the ones that owners don't notice it on). Turn up your home cinema system and enjoy.

Have you read this review? They seem to rather like it:

Quite fancy the 42" model myself...

Only way if you are worried is to get them to take the actual set you are buying out of the box and connect it up so you can see for yourself before you pay them.
I would be surprised however if a Panny was really likely to have those faults you mention.

I was in a similar position to you in July 2005 when considering buying one of the first Panasonic Viera 42" HD ready plasma TV's. Some people on AV forums said they could see a horizontal line across the screen at the midway point as though the picture was made up of two halves. Well, I went ahead and bought it anyway, it's not missed a beat since I bought it and I've never seen the horizontal line on the screen either.

All panny's have buzzing and banding issues to some extent...
Sometimes its barely noticeable, sometimes its horrendous...Its a bit of a lottery.
That said,most manufacturers have problems..
I have had a Philips and 2 Viera's plasma's and all have had problems. Now have a Samsung LCD and upto now its been superb (touch wood)..
Problem with my last panny.

Had a Panny 42 PX80B Plasma for 2.5 years now.
A little buzzing when we first got it but it soon dissappeared.
Other than that, it has been superb.
Standard speakers are ****e though if you are into games and movies.

I've realised if I get too "caught up in the detail" of a product review it becomes a painful experience of what if's
So basically I try to look at the summary of what's "meant to be good" from the people in the know and just go for it
The same can be said for choosing a car/bike as well, sometimes you've got to just test drive/ride a few and plump for the one that feels right for you
