If I give someone my bank details, for example to transfer money for a car I have for sale??? They may be on the other side of the world see??
Can they empty my account?? I have no intention of handing over the details - but anyone know if it would leave me wide open to attack??

NEVER give your bank details to ANYONE!
We done this with double glazing and it was a nightmare!
Phone the bank NOW or first thing in the morning telling them what has happened, (if it has) and get it sorted!
Let this be a lesson to you!
Joan.

To make a transfer into an account you need no more than you can get off of a cheque, are you never going to pay anyone by cheque?
Obviously you shouldn't give any additional details.

I HAVE NOT done ANYTHING yet!! Just wondering because someone in Thialand is buying one of my cars - without seeing it, although it all sounds legit, I am just sceptical!!??
I have had a cash deposit in the post - but I struggle to see why anyone would buy a car without seeing it, it is only ONE of 291 made - and it maybe is the only one left in original condition but still seems strange??
JoanUK could you ellaborate?? as has been said, anyone can get all the details off the cheque? why doesnt EVERYONE get cheques and empty bank accounts??? cant be that simple surely to god?

errrr.... how do you move money around then? giving someone acc. number and sort code (which is on cheques anyway) lets them deposit money in your account, cant see the problem there (allways use this method when paying money between mates etc)

I fill all sorts of DD forms with SortCode/Account No which get handled by every admin spotty oik going plus, send cheques to all sorts and direct transfer money for group holidays etc all of which gives my Bank, Branch, Sort Code, and Account Name to an awful lot of people. If there was a way for someone to transfer money out whenever they wanted to, they're keeping very quiet.
If you regard Account Number/Sort code as info which shouldn't be disclosed to anyone, that rules out cheques, electronic tansfer, standing orders, and direct debits - which leaves bundles of used fivers - or coloured beads

Timmy Potato says:-
Er, why don't you just speak to your bank; they should be able to answer any queries without us lot speculating ?!?!?

Maybe because my bank isnt open at 10pm at night and the answer might lie here!!

if you're really worried, have a savings account and a current account, and maybe a 3rd account.
That way you only need to give out the details of the account with the least cash in it. Simple.
I don't see how you can avoid giving out your bank details - it's more difficult than you think to get at your money. You ever tried taking a large sum of money out of your account -banks are loathed to give any money out, even if it's yours!!
24 hour phone banking
internet banking
It doesn't bother me - I'm always overdrawn!!!

If someone was going to make a payment from (say) Thailand (or anywhere else for that matter), they would normally use the SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Inter-bank Financial Transfers (I think - it has been a long time since I worked for a bank )) system. A secure electronic system used by the vast majority of banks globally.
To make the transfer, the guy sending the money would have to know your details (and this would normally include your name, branch sortcode and account details). To do the reverse and empty your account would be more difficult and he would have to make a request on your behalf and this would require access to any security passwords and / or your signature (if it was a written request). If you are in any doubt, speak to your bank first, although I can't see how this could be done without giving over some of your details.

How about you open a new account at a bank you currently dont have any accounts with just for the transaction and then close it again once its done with? Or am I missing something from this whole line of questioning?
You finally found someone to buy that dodgy old escort then! What did you do? Put an add in the Thailand Auto Trader
