Those pesky defrost elements, which is nothing new really with these types of fridge; Probably why our Samsung frost free makes a right stench every now and again (some of the Samsung frost frees can catch fire too apparently: http://www.which.co.uk/news/2010/02/...e-risk-203491/ ). Basically where you have a heater and lots of flamable expanding foam insulation and plastic, you're gonna have trouble.

The amount of times I had to try and explain to customers at my old job to why their industrial refrigeration units contained heaters inside to and not to fiddle with the timer on the equipment unless they wanted their chiller unit to be encase in a solid block of ice.

Wonder why they say they have to contact the customers "proactively"

Why don't they just ring them up instead of trying to impress us with the flowery language?

Not just the cheap and nasties. Theres a recall on Bosch dishwashers as well, but they're managing to keep in pretty low key.

I've got one of these Fidge/Freezers ... bought it in 2001 from Scottish Power - who have now gone bust.

I completed my registration card and sent it to BEKO like a good boy, I haven't moved house - yet they have failed to contact me.

I have e-mailed them and am trying to get through on their helpline number - it's engaged all the time!

I suspect idiots who don't know what model number they have got and how to find the serial number are jamming the switchboard! I also suspect that some half-wits who own Hotpoint Freezers are ringing up too ...... it never ceases to amaze me how damned stupid most of the people in this world are!

I guess for the consumers who have filled in and posted the warranty card, they should contact them. No excuse not to really

But many people don't register, because when they do they get a load of junk mail off Domestic & General trying to sell insurance againt it failing outside of warranty (A saleman would call that an extended warranty ).

Pop a email off to watchdog See if they can get a statement off BEKO explaining why they haven't contacted you over a matter that could cost you your life.

I take it when you registered you recieved a load of rubbish off Domestic and General...proving they have logged your details correctly (and sold them on)!

(ps check your smoke alarm battery )

Chances are that was manufactured pre 2000 though.
Check your smoke alarm and hearing aid batteries.

Yeah, mine is one of those at risk .... they are sending out a British Gas man on Friday morning to fix it.

I guess they have an 'arrangement' with British Gas then?

It's been a great Fridge Freezer for 10 years ... at least it keeps the Kitchen warm!

I tried every 10 minutes for about 3 hours this morning ..... at one point it actually rang, and said I was in a queue ...... I was on hold for about 25 minutes on speakerphone, I just left it there while I worked.

They then answered, confirmed mine was a unit which needed the repair and arranged an Engineer to visit Friday

What is your Serial Number?

It could be that yours was built AFTER 2008 - although still retaining an old Model Number.

Good luck getting through on the phone!!

Yes, as I understand it you have a 2009 built unit ..... although it may have the same Model Number as an affected Unit, it is too new to have the old switch.

That's how I understand it - but you must make sure you understand that yourself.

At best he'd be a technician Pete. Not sure you need to do four years University study followed by several years working in the industry to fix a fridge. It's such a shame that Engineer is not a protected title in the UK like it is in Germany. But then aren't you supposedly an "engineer"?

This post could not have anymore winge and negativity in it.

Can't get through to the call centre and you immediately blame all the 'stupid people' phoning up, whom you have no proof of even existing.

Classic!

Someone just came to replace the part in our Fridge/Freezer.

Beko are obviously hiring interesting people though: He turned up in a very beaten up car with parts strewn all over the back seat. No identification at all.

If it were just my wife at home, I would have told her not to let him in.
