Default Which Sat-Nav?

My Garmin is too old to update now. Updates used to be free, but Garmin now want £56 for an update the robbing dogs

With so many new bits of roads it's time for new one

Any recommendations for a reasonably priced one?

Cheers

Just buy a map, unless you go to random/strange inner city destinations every day..

If you have a smart phone with free internet, just use google maps navigation. It's the way forward!

Have a crawl around the internet to get "free" maps. TomTom wanted £40 for a discounted map, plus another £35pa for the map update service along with another £50 for their LIVE services.

After running around the internet I've saved all my map costs. I may pay the LIVE fee though

$90 for an update - can't you buy a new one for that??

Free option looks difficult/impossible

Tom Tom One is cheap and good, I need a sat nav about once a month and this serves the purpose. I also have a free one on my iPhone and when I'm in the other car it seems to do the job fairly well (Not as good as Tom Tom though).

If you have an iPhone, just buy the Tom Tom app for it. Had mine on my iPhone 3, then transfered it to my iPhone 4. Will need to buy the iPhone dock for it though to get the best reception and charges the phone at the same time. Never had a problem with mine and get free updates.

If the OP goes down this route, try the free one first (NavFree UK and ROI).

I'm pretty sure the Tom Tom app will be better, but the free one does work.

Thanks for all the replies

I would prefer a stand alone unit rather than using the phone - I like the double indemnity of looking at the screen. I have used Navigation on my HTC before now

One other thing, is there one system better than the other for checking the route the SN has chosen?

I was coming home from the sea-side and mine kept trying to send me a longer A-road route

Possibly you have it set to fastest not shortest? It doesn't know you're likely to blast down country roads like Loeb so A road theoretically faster.....

Mine makes some odd decisions, but I just ignore it for routes I know (I use it for ETA or if the roads are blocked.). It was invaluable in Florida and when we go to mainland Europe though.

Nokias ovi maps is free for turn by turn now and with downloaded maps there is no roaming charge either (unlike google)
Had my old n86 next to a top of the range tom in rural france and turn by turn there was virtually no difference.
