It's not that bad, you can still go to Gmail.com but a native client will be better.
I kind of liked it, it's close to the iPad but not quite the full package.

I've had one to evaluate for about 3 weeks now. I would say it is pretty good, has 720pHD screen and HD camera with inbuilt stereo speakers. Can truly multitask, though haven't really found much use for that ability, could run 10 apps simultaneously with ease. It is only enabled for wireless, there is no 3G option currently. You can "tether" it to a 3G phone if the phone as hotspot capability. It is geared to be a corporate device and you have to use Blackberry Bridge if you want to read work emails and access intranet, etc. This link is completely secure and once you disconnect the blackberry bridge, it will leave no corporate data on the device. The browser is good and fast and can play flash content.

I got one through work then was given another the same day!
So far I've been impressed - it does exactly what it says it will. We have BBs & a BES so email, contacts, callendar, notes/memo are all there, same as my BB. Used tethering to access the internet when I was away from WiFi which worked well, even when I was roaming in Rep Ireland. One of the things I've used is the Kobo books app & bought a couple of books - excellent for waiting at airports.
Things I'd like it to be able to do are Java and have a SW VPN client. Java is coming I gather, as is the ability to run Android apps. Any other sys admin type tools are welcome as well. A better spreadsheet client would be handy too.
Its a bit heavier than I expected, but not outrageously so. Sizewise its an easy single hand hold. It looks smart & the neoprene cover it comes with means I don't have to spend more £ on stupid priced covers.

so it needs bridging to a bb, is that still the case on wifi ? if you want to access emails?
I.e the GF has here personal 9700 on t-mobile , if we get her a playbook will she be able to use it on wifi to get her hotmails etc without connecting to her BB?

She will need to have Blackberry Bridge installed on her 9700 in order for her to use the phone's 3G for internet access whilst roaming. Alternatively she should be able to connect to free wifi hotspots too for internet access. The Playbook currently has no 3G option.

She will also be able to tether the playbook to any other 3G mobile either via bluetooth (not very reliable) or if the phone has wifi hotspot capability for roaming internet access.

been using mine a few days now and have to say, personally I prefer it to my iPad.
Actually surprised at how good it is, for a first gen device (thanks obviously to Apple for setting the stage)

I won't slate it as I quite like it. Fair play to RIM if they can gain the momentum of the iPad but I doubt they will and without it it's not quite the full package. Once again, I quite like it.

Why is it not the full package? saying it hasn't got the 'momentum' of the ipad, which i guess by that you mean the following, doesn't really answer it.
