Default Anyone had laser eye surgery?

My daughter is thinking of having laser eye surgery. As there are so companies out there doing this now I was wondering if anyone on here has had it done. If so, who was it with? would you recommend them and what cost?

Opticians please feel free to add your opinion.

Its all done by a great big machine I had mine done 6-7 years ago at optical express, the most depressing part there was being told to arrive at 9 am then hanging around for half the day before I got zapped. The wave form they offer you is mostly a rip off, very few people benefit from it, pay extra to have the flap cut by a laser not the vibrating saw thingy which is pretty un pleasant. I would guess that all the places use the same machines to do the zapping so pick the cheapest or the place with the best looking staff.
My eyes are still fine and it took them about 5 minutes to switch the machine on and let it do its thing.

My wife has had it done, says it's the best 3k she has ever spent, It was done by Optimax in Manchester, which I would recommend. I can't remember which way it was done but the flap was cut by laser. The waiting around is a bit of a pain but not as much as the pain afterwards, well worth it in the end. make sure she goes to a place with a good rep as as you know, you only get 1 pair of eyes

Had mine done 2 years ago, had everything done, originally quoted me 4k to do it, bargained down to £1950 and 12 months interest free too. Money really well spent, had it done 4 pm Tuesday, was driving at 11am Wednesday, back at work Thursday. No pain at all, eye drops for a couple of weeks, can not recommend optimax finchley road enough.

Quite a few people on here have had it (do a search) including me. Summary it was the best £2K I spent as I used to leave/drop/dislike my glasses. I had the most expensive IntraLase Femtosecond and Wavefront and the recovery was a day or so. I did have eye infections for a few months afterwards for some bizarre reason.

I still have good eye sight five years later, although I think the ravages of time are catching up as my weak eye is getting slightly worse.

Summary of companies:

Ultralase: Expensive, good quality

Optimax: The one I chose. Had a 'geek' of a doctor who was eye obsessed. Good service and you can bargain / get vouchers.

Optical Express: Muppets. Kicked out the machine from the wall socket when doing the preliminary examination.

I had it done 2 years ago at ultralase in Birmingham. Very professional, very expensive at £3950 reading some of these posts i could have haggled a bit but there ya go. I had the most expensive option and was told it was pain free. The op itself is pain free but its the 4hrs later that hurts like crap. Worth it yes i hated wearing glasses and couldnt get used to contacts.

Daughter has an appointment next week with Optimax and is supposed to be seeing an optometrist called Bianca Cocco. Purely out of interest I thought I'd google her to see if I could find any info, reviews whatever on her. This is what I found.

She will not be seeing her!

I used to have BAD eyesight, minus 17 or 18, I had contact lenses put into my eyes. A procedure called Intra-Ocular Lenses (ICL)

My left eye still had quite a bit of prescription left so I had a bit of a touch up. I cant remember the propper name but it was the laser cutting the front of the eye off and zapping it before popping the lens back on.

After all the work on my eyes I passed the eysight test for the emergency service I was wanting to join and thus I've now got a career

The whole thing was done with Optimax.

This:

1. On 19 February 2007 you received a formal police caution for possession
of a Class A drug (Cocaine) contrary to Section 5(2) of and schedule 4 to
the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971;
2. You are suffering from matters which affect your health; the nature of
which are set out in Schedule 1, Part A;
3. You are suffering from matters which affect your health; the nature of
which are set out in Schedule 1, Part B.
And by virtue of the matters set out above your fitness to practise is impaired by
reason of your
(a) Caution;
(b) Adverse physical or mental health

Just because she had one negative test does not prove she is has not taken drugs since nor will in the future. Just the fact that she was cautioned whilst being a medical practitioner is enough for me not to allow my daughter to see her. She did not deny the possesion either.

I had mine done at Moorfields Eye Hospital just before Xmas 2010.
In my opinion I would go nowhere else, they are a bit more than the rest but I think well worth it, £4k.

However, it has not all be plain sailing and people need to realise the risks.
Both eyes were about -3.0 before. My right eye is now perfect but my left seems to have been over-corrected (a known risk of laser surgery) and appears to be about +1.0. So I have gone to long sighted in that eye.

I was told to wait a few months and it should get better - it hasn't. I have an appointment in April to have a check up and have the one eye corrected if it is needed.

Everyone has their opinions but I would not go anywhere aside from Moorfields, it's worth the difference, the surgeon in there is the best, and world renowned (and I still had complications). PM me if you want his name. Personally I would rather wear contacts than go to one of these high street laser clinics.

So you would go back to the place that charged double then cocked it up ? Unless I can be corrected the work is done by machine so what difference does the surgeon make ? All he does is cut or remove the flap then switch the machine on.

The work is done by the surgeon to decide the correction, the machine just then 'burns away' the bits that it is told to. Surgeon is a bit strong I guess, it is a specialised optician.

They can fluff up pulling away the flap as well.

(Optimax was fine as I mentioned and they have the slight advantage of having down thousands of them)

Yes I would. I'm not sure he cocked it up. If you read up about laser surgery you will see about 3% need corrections afterwards. It's not an exact science. Personally, for me it was worth paying double to go to one of the best eye hospitals in the world and have the best people doing it. The surgeon has a lot more input than you think.
I remember another guy on here who's father was a doctor, saying if he wants it done there is only one place to go, Moorfields.
Everyone makes their own choices but that's my opinion.
