Sorry mate, not really that into the bikes enough to give advice. I have just picked up a CB Cape Wrath 03 which I'm intending on using as soon as I get my finger out.

Indeed, I got a 2010 Focus Fat Boy (as below) from Wiggle.co.uk for £495 delivered late last year. Great bike, ride it nearly everyday and nothing has broken off yet

Don't forget to factor in cost of helmet and a decent bike lock! They can significantly eat into your budget!

I have had a Bobcat,it was an excellent bike... Although i did prefer the Northside. Sold both my Marins last year and ended up with a Cannondale as a xmas prezzy to myself..

Cant go wrong with a Marin!!

Very nearly bought a hardtail last year but ended up getting a Specialized Tricross on the advice of my bike mad Dad. It's a fantastic bit of kit and much better suited to how I ride than a mountain bike. It takes towpaths and firetracks in its stride and is much faster and more capable than a mountain bike on the road.

Hybrids are a bit beige though. They don't really do anything very well and the cool kids will take the ****.

The 2011 Trek range this year is amazing mate, I got the Trek 6000 a month or so ago and I'm really impressed with it. I think the 4500 is about £500. Also if you are looking for a deal speak to Evans cycles, they have branches all over the place, I was really impressed with my local one, very good service and free servicing.

Hope this helps

Carreras are getting good write ups, but I would check out 2010 models and also vist e-bay for one a couple of years old.

My lad just bought an £800 trials bike off there for £200, two years old. It's in perfect nick except for wanting a new rear tyre, £20.

Google Pauls cycles as well they usually have one and two year old bikes with big reductions but limited frame sizes!

I brought my Gary Fisher Wahoo Disc via my work's cyclescheme. Tried a few bikes including a few hybrids. Found the Wahoo comfortable and handles well and is well spec'd for the price. A good bike shop will allow you to try them out.
