Funnily enough I've had 3 companies this week phoning me to see if they can come and test all my electrical equipment.

Do you really need it doing? you don't actually have to PAT test hardly anything in a company unless things have changed recently,

PAT test= big scam

Sadly I do, the company wants to have any electrical devices not purchase by them, to be tested.

Can't they test it as privately owned equipment, in amongst their own testing regime?

Unless your insurer demands it.

An employer has a legal duty of care to ensure appliances in the work place are safe to use. How you prove that is down to you; but a PATs test is the common and widely recognised method. Of course if an employee was electrocuted and the item wasn't tested or inspected to ensure it was safe to use, then they could take you to the cleaners.

However, if that monitor is for personal use and to be only used by yourself and nobody else, you can get away with it.

We used this loophole at college with our personal kettle; a lecturer tried to nick it thinking it belonged to the college (it didn't). After correcting her, she then tried to confiscate as it was not PAT tested. Someone went to the libarary and photocopied the regs and highlighted them for her just to prove how wrong she was ( god we had some geeks in that class ).

Well yeah, but I wouldn't be able to use it until they "got round to it"

How old is it? typically monitors don't need a PAT till they're over 5 years old.... a visual will suffice until then.

You're welcome.

What I forgot to add was the extortionate charges they want.

where i work they are anally retentive about this stuff, every time a power lead is replaced,it has to be tested, whenever an internal part is tested within a p.c, tested again.

if an item is moved from 1 desk to another desk, yes, test it

I was paying £50 for all my gear at the wash to be "tested", it was arranged through head office, to be honest i never even bothered for the first 4 years

But it would appear nobody else bothered either, so head office took it upon them selves to send one round, when he arrived on site and said he was to do the PAT testing, i just let him get on with it.

2 days later a letter arrives saying that head office was sending a PAT tester around and the charge for his services was £50 + VAT

He never even checked half the stuff, he just stuck stickers on them and buggered off.

I think he checked the microwave and some vaccums, the xbox, monitor, PC server, 8 cctv cams etc etc were not even touched.

Not that it mattered to me, i had a sheet of paper saying everything was tested, so if anything went **** up, that was now his problem

My mate usually did a quick mini valet for a local tester and he added his stickers to my mates gear

Stickers might put a general nosy parker off the scent, but they don't have much value without documentation. And 99% of the PAT test is visual examination. Anyone who has done a course and has access to a basic test rig can do it for you.

100% totally agree.

Thanks to New Labour, and thinking up ways to tax companies even more, they came up with a gem of an idea.

Once a year, get some monkey to wander into people's businesses and start pulling plugs out all over the place and leave if half plugged back in with a bl00dy sticker on it.

Our office is full of plugs, kettles, fridge, vacum cleaner, with stickers all over them. Looks a bl00dy mess.

Twice now, when the bloke has come out, I've walked up to him and said, whatever you do, don't just pull the plug on the server. If you need to, I'll shut it down. Just give me a shout. Whats happened. Monkey boy just starts ripping the plugs to the Server out of the wall.

PAT test, my @rse.

There is a rule for electrical appliances which are new and / or double insulated. They dont need to be tested for X number of years after origanal purchaise.

Didnt have to have my phone charger tested due that.

Check to see if you do actually need one.

Stilover PAT testing is normally done by guys who have done a short course or are training to be sparks and are paid so much per item normaly about £0.50 so they have to a lot per hour to make it worth while and aren't the brightest tradesmen normally, of course some companies use fully qualified sparks but these tend not to win the contracts based on price as the unit charge from a lot of professional companies is about £0.90 per item if you have over a few hundred and on nights its about a £1.00
