Default NASA Press Conference - Aliens?!

This Thursday...

http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2010...robiology.html

Fingers crossed they've discovered a race of peace loving Ewoks and not some evil alien insect race a la Starship Troopers.

IIRC Hawkins reckons we are way too late looking for aliens as we are looking for earth like radio signals - and he thinks any aliens out there will be way more advanced than using basic radio and probably have autonomous ships etc that need no direct communication to their home planet (but do communicate between ships).

There is also the thought that we have only been around as an advanced people for less than 100 years - and aliens will be hundreds of thousands, if not millions of years old - thus will know how to hide away from us and can easily wipe us out if they wanted too.

It's at least 200 years.

It probably means broadcasting radio signals outwards, as this is the only way anything else might detect us.

You may say that, but the article states an 'astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life' - even if they haven't found ET just yet, it is pretty intriguing.

I still think its very naive to believe that we are the only life forms out there.

Most likely outcome is that other things will discover us - if they haven't already done so of course

The statement they've made is rather interesting. I'd say they have found single cell life forms or the basis for such in ice / water molecules (under x1000000000 magnification ) on a planet in our solar system. That or it's something in some far off galaxy which we won't be able to send people to until we're reincarnated as hyper intelligent bees a thousand millennia from now

Perhaps there is however the Universe is so large (+ still expanding) that there is virtually zero chance of finding them or vice versa put it this way, you're WAY more likeley to win the Euro Lottery, get struck by lightning or perhaps get hit on the head by a meteor

TX.

PS

"Virtually zero chance" means that it's so close to zero, it may as well be zero!

It! I have a name you know... tsk tsk. You missed the T off the front.
Yes, thats what I meant BTW.

Our first radio signals wont make it out of our own galaxy for a long long time. It will be another 2.5 million years before our first crappy radio signals make it to another major galaxy. Even the nearest small galaxy will be another 30 thousand years. So not till the year 31,900.

I love it. Whenever there's an article about alien life forms on the Daily Mail website, all the bible bashers come out and comment about how science is wrong and that God created everything, blah, blah, blah.....
