First this
"the vapour trail of a missile rising from the water about 35 miles (56 km) offshore"
Then this
"It is unclear if the suspected missile was launched from land or sea"
maybe the US gov should ask the CBS news helicopter crew whether it came from land or sea

Apparently it was an optical illusion. It was a plane flying towards the camera!!

Strange how a dodgy looking printer was splashed all over the news when it was found on a cargo plane and used to dismiss calls to relax airport security but we have a suspected missle launch and it's 'Oh, just an illusion. Nothing to see here' .... Or am I being a little cynical ??

Strangely not a single yank soul has remembered to bring up the "Scud in a boat" theory.
There is practically no control over what is sailing about, and they also dont keep a tab on all low tech missiles out there.
It would be fun to see them come up with an excuse for that.....

Bloody good job that Dubya felt it necessary to try to drown a few "darkies" to save 'eaf-row rolleyes: Why aren't we at MI5 "doomed" status by now?

There is some media hype about this. A notification was issued to indicate that the area was to be a no fly zone for a certain period. The navy person asked about it eiher wasn't cleared to know about it, or could not speak about it
My guess is it is a test of a new solid fuel system

missile test caught on camera, nothing more sinister than that at a guess. the confusion is because the military wont say it was or wasn't them due to classification.
not sure what all the fuss is about myself.

I have certainly seen many contrails which don't look quite right until you get a different angle on it. I will say that you have to be pretty high to cause a contrail depending on atmospheric conditions, and what was causing it appears to be travelling unsually fast for an aircraft travelling at that sort of height. The colour is due to the sun alright.
I can't offer a positive reason for it anyway.

in part of the vid, look at teh very end of the trail (where what ever it is actualy is) you cna see some orange glow, could be the sun light, but looks more like the light of a rocket motor to me.

"Usually, however, launches are announced in advance, giving aviators and mariners time to get out of the way. "Even if an operation is hush-hush, the military will still issue appropriate safety notices," notes Webb. A total-surprise launch is rare.
There is another possibility more likely than a mystery missile: It might have been an ordinary contrail. "The airspace off of the California coast is among the busiest in the U.S.," continues Webb. "Aircraft contrails form in a region called the contrail zone. In southern California, this zone lies approximately between 33,000 and 38,000 feet. During the cooler months of the year, this region drops down in altitude to the area where many jets fly. This produces a large number of visible contrails."
"Depending on an observer's perspective, a horizontal contrail can appear to be climbing steeply and resemble a rocket or missile trail," he says.
Nov. 8th wouldn't be the first time a contrail was mis-identified. Spaceweather.com frequently receives reports of apparent comets, meteors, and decaying satellites that are really airplane exhaust lit up by the setting sun. This could be such a case.
Indeed, evidence is mounting in favor of the contrail explanation. First, take a look at these pictures comparing the Nov. 8th event to other known airplane contrails. They all look like missiles--an artifact of camera-contrail viewing geometry. Second, reader Rob Matson notes that "a Boeing 757-200 from Honolulu to Phoenix flew right over Catalina Island at 37,000 feet at the time in question. Here is a map of the flight." Another reader, Paul Carreiro of Los Angeles, observes that "there have been no reports of any noctilucent cloud activity of the type which follow every sunset launch event we see here in Southern California. The lack of noctilucent reports or photos is further evidence that the object creating the trail did not transit through the stratosphere."
In short, it was probably an airplane."

Sorry - wasn't trying to say that the *printers* weren't a threat, or made up (as if .... ), just that there seems to be vast difference in the response to both. One a disarmed printer bomb. One a *supposed* missile fired just off the coatd of the good ol' US of A ...!

Lets face it, 101 centigrammelitres can take a jumbo out, but 99 centigrammelitres can't, so bring on the perv scanners (or is that a winkie )
Cheers,
