Default Anyone understand US politics?

OK so the Republicans have given Obama a bloody nose as many Americans are fed up with current economic situation over there and the impact that has on their jobs etc. Fair enough perhaps.

But what I haven't heard is any idea of what they actually plan to do about it if they can force Obama to change direction. All I hear is "cut spending, cut taxes, increase job prospects and respect the individual". Well what does that mean? Doesn't make any sense to me.

Anyone here got a grip on actual Republican strategy?

They will probably just do the same as Obama did. I bet they wouldn't cut spending a great deal. Probs just cut taxes like bush did in a kind of gamble that that might help things.

So boring though. Don't know why it takes up so much of our news at night. Can't imagine folk all over the country being glued to their sets in the anticipation of U.S. election results. They can vote blue or red, that's all we need to know. Lol

It's all just rhetorical nonsense over there, soundbite politics, and who can shout the loudest to drown out the more moderate, common-sense viewpoints, wins the day.

The American public seem to think they'll have a better chance solving the financial mess by re-electing the party that got them into it, rather than Obama who has started to reduce their deficit, yes at the expense of the extremely rich - it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Take tax breaks for example, the Bush adminstration gave tax breaks to the very rich in hope of a trickle-down effect, however what appears to have happened is that there is no such thing as a trickle-down effect, the richest don't spend any more money, they just save it - and yet the Republicans are calling for the extension of these tax breaks - the whole thing is just so sad, and the ones who end up paying for it are the very poorest who are losing their homes and jobs.

It's interesting how much they were celebrating Obama (southpark episode is funny as f*ck), and now they all hate him a few years later.

Yes I agree with that. I think I am a bit naive as I thought the American voters had a bit more nous and might have given Obama a better run for his money. What do they expect - an instant 2-year fix? And they get taken in by the bollox spouted by the Tea Party.

Losing the Democrat majority in the House of Representatives is going to make it impossible to govern surely.

Don't give much for his chances of re-election in two years either. He is set on the unusual course of a single term President.

An instant fix? well, yes............let's not forget that this is a nation brought up on a diet of TV programs in which all ills are put right in 40 minutes, in which DNA results come back in 3 minutes etc etc.

Roosevelt, Reagan, Bush jnr, Clinton all received a drubbing in the midterms

and all went on to become successful presidents

(indeed we know from our own political experience that the incumbents often receive a kicking midterm)

a good allegorical view of present day America can be seen in George A Romero's Zombie film Land of the Dead

We shall see then, but I think he has got his work cut out.

I think his re-election chances actually got better!!

He can now make the Republicans stand up and help clear up their mess, if they don't he can hold them accountable.

Plus the Tea Party is going to utterly destroy the Republicans Presidential election chances. The second that the Republicans try to appease the Tea Party they're going to be toast!

I think he needs to remake himself into a very different person to get the votes back. If the Republicans clear up the mess, I reckon they will keep the votes.
