Default Help: Fraud

My wife just received a bill from "Very" for £2000 for a very nice new Sony 18" Laptop and Blackberry Bold.

We have no dealings with this company (and of course have more taste than to order a Blackberry ).

I just spoke to the company who have passed me onto another department that I will call on Monday.

What else should we do? Police? Check other things?

Thanks for any advice.

Steve

Police, Bank, I dont think you can be too keen in a time like this. A few years ago, my wife 'bought' a telly from a US website, about $400. We noticed on her bank statement and spoke to them straight away. Just signed a slip to confirm we didnt order it and the money was returned. Not the same issue for you, but I would imagine the same basic procedures would be used by Very, especially if they werent delivered and signed for at your house.

You have received an invoice from the company, but not received any goods and there has been no financial information handed over? Is this right?

If so, bin it off.

Correct. Although the address is obviously ours and the name is that of my wife. It is a 'proper' company not a dodgy one, so I'm concerned that other details (bank?) were used to open and validate the account?

Few things..

Name & Registered Office.

SHOP DIRECT HOME SHOPPING LIMITED
FIRST FLOOR, SKYWAYS HOUSE
SPEKE ROAD
SPEKE
LIVERPOOL
L70 1AB

They are a retail sale via mail order house and were previously known as..

LITTLEWOODS SHOP DIRECT HOME SHOPPING LIMITED

Imo, you have no problem here, mail order catalogue's are open to abuse due to their nature. Wait for the call Monday is all I would do, in the knowledge that you will not be out of pocket. PM me if you incur a problem, you most likely will not.

Thank you for your help. I spoke to their fraud department this afternoon. Apparently the items were shipped to somewhere 10 miles away. The account is closed and my wife put on a 'no fraud' list.

This must happen all the time as someone was allowed to open an account with just a name (that was spelt wrong), address and date of birth. Then order £2000 of goods straight away to be shipped to a different address. That process screams please rip me off.

Might be worth looking at your credit report also, even as a one off. Credit expert would be a good start.
Check there are no other financial agreements in your name that you are not yet aware of.

I've been told you can access the statutory report online for all 3 agencies now, so you can just pay the £2 online rather than having to sign up for any services.
