The dreambox can be a bit of a nightmare for a novice to set up and get running. However with perseverance it is a far more capable machine than the Humax, google dreambox cardsharing for some idea. The dreambox also has a cardreader slot should you want to pay for a subscrition to a satellite tv provider.

If you just want to watch the FTA channels then the Humax will do the job and will be easier to get your head round.

Of course you'd also need to invest in a dish, LNB and cable and then set it up on your chosen sat.

I've got the Humax. It takes about a minute to boot up, which is guff. It constantly wants to retune, which is guff.

It stores files better than Sky+ which is nice. It's cheaper than Sky+, which is nice.

All in all, it does its job admirably

if you have a Sky HD sub or an adult multi-channel card sub then its usually no problem getting into a card share. As Ant says the problem is getting a card share server that is reliable and doesn't go **** up every five minutes.

You could go back to programming your own cards. its been a while since i have done it it but some of the european providers (Palco, Viasat, ABSat et al) only changed their codes once a month.

Hahaha, pic cards, goldies and silvers, dragoncams etc. etc.

Got a whole drawer full of programmers and cards that for the most part only lasted a few months. All good fun, but the dreambox definitely wins hands down...
