Legalities of using hand signals when driving
In a moment of stupidity on friday I decided to take on a concrete pillar at works car park and came off 2nd best losing my passenger side wing mirror in the process. As it was hanging on by a couple of wires I pulled it off to make the trip home. Thats now stopped the indicators working on both the working wing mirror and the normal indicators.
When my insurance company asked if the car is driveable I said yes other than the indicators not working. They said to use hand signals which I found quite strange. My understanding was that you could use them if an emergency and say if I was on the way to a garage to get it repaired but not purposely driving without working indicators. The Highway Code doesnt help much.

I think they are still legal, as long as you make the signal and I wouldn't worry about making signals anyway based on the fact that 90 percent of the British motoring public cant be arsed flick a little level on the wheel to give us a clue where they are aiming their mobile phone booth.

"... Arm signals - For use when direction indicator signals are not used, or when necessary to reinforce direction indicator signals and stop lights ..."
I'm sure that, at least for MOT purposes, if a light is fitted it must work (in terms of indicators anyway). I know that's true for a motorbike so almost certainly applies for a car. Though, obviously, people won't be looking for hand signals from other drivers as they'll be on their mobiles .... :-)

I don't think the law has changed with regard to hand signals. They used to be the primary method of letting others know where you were going and the flashing indicators were accepted as an addition to them.
No reason why you can't use them that I can see. There are specific signals which are listed in the Highway Code last time I looked.

I can't even remember if doing a left hand turn you are supposed to rotate your arm in a clockwise or anti-clockwise rotation. Anyone?

Anti-clockwise seems to ring bells when I try it

The law does say that all parts of your vehicle must be in a roadworthy condition,as for indicators come to where I live most of the drivers dont use theirs they use a system of I dont care you dont matter, and that is just the plod. The only hand signals used are: w@nker,stick something in your bottom,go away, something growing out of your forehead.you have a small willey !!!!

Thanks for all the replies. By now my indicators are working as was a blown fuse and some shorting wires from the wrecked wing mirror.
I did a few hand signals on monday morning but a) it was raining and b) you notice how often other drivers dont bother to indicate so I soon gave up.

Something about hand signals to make you smile, work has been quiet for months finally got a job 260miles a day round trip 14hr days but its work.Coming home dropped a mate off all I had on my mind was cool Bud in my fridge, well there is a two lane road next to an estate 40mph as you aproach there are signs indicating nearside lane blocked off for road works so everyone gets in the right lane plenty of time well I am travelling up the road towards cones when a white corsa come hurtling up the inside of me suddenly the driver throws the car into the gap between me and car in front no indicators.I hit the brakes otherwise I would have gone into the drivers door,i was that close.I sounded the horn flashed my lights to which I recieved a whole torrent of hand signals from the cars occupants who were:blonde woman in the back was so fat they must have poured her thro the sunshine roof fingers like pork sausages full of gold rings, front passenger slightly smaller driver about 14 yr old,the abuse towards me just carried on,I was only thinking about my cold Bud.Well as luck would have it a round about came up and I decided to go around this car full of peasants, well they were so busy giving me friendly waves the driver cut the exit corner the curb being very high and 25mph torn her front wheel out the car and launched her onto the grass.I stopped looked at the little girl driver stuck my middle finger up and blew her a kiss,Allah was being kind to me!ps was I wrong to wave back?
