you dont really need to backup your phone because all of your contacts emails phone numbers will be auto synced with gmail but I think there are a few programs available but have never felt the need.

angry birds
barcode scanner
colour flashlight
currency convertor
freetube
google translate
handcent
hotukdeals
last.fm (my best one)
nubinews
opera mini
ocado (5 stars!)
phoobucket
places directory (5 stars)
rebtel
shazam
sickipedia
snesoid
talking parrot
websms

and a few more!

All the above are good and I use them all daily

Let me know how you get on with it Ant.
I like google sync for keeping everything up to date, shares the info nicely and quickly with the other gadgets.

Angry Birds FTW!!

Been playing this quite a bit recently.

Other stuff i use

Last FM (radio app)
ANRadio (shoutcast radio app)
Beebplayer (bbc i-player type app)
Bloo 1.5 (because the stock facebook app is GASH)
Twitter
Barcode Scanner
Most of the Google Apps
Photobucket (handy!)
SyncMyPix (syncs facebook pics with contacts)
Plus various benchmark tools as i am constantly changing roms to newer builds (doubt your missus needs these lol!)

Currently running a super stable build of 2.2 froyo on my Hero, its not crashed, lagged, or missbehaved since i flashed it, and the linpack benchmark results have DOUBLED over the phones results when it was stock, awesome.

Is there big changes from 2.1 to 2.2.

Her phone already syncs her fb friends pics with contacts , that's one thing that I likes the easiness of it.

I'm glad you think that about the facebook app it doesn't push notifications does it? Does bloo?

My phone used to sync the contact pictures when it was running HTC`s "sense" interface, but the custom rom i now use has had all the aftermarket theme/skins removed from it, its just pure/raw android.

The themed interface stuff can look good, but its usually just extra bloat imo.

Hence why i now need the synch app to add the pictures to my contacts (use it once and you can uninstall it if you like)

The facebook app has never pushed notification for me (half the time it gives errors anyway), but Bloo does, you can run both of them together if you like (i just use Bloo for the notification really)

I went from 1.5 "HTC Sense" to a custom 2.1 "HTC Sense", and then a custom 2.2 "None Sense"

The difference for me between 2.1 and 2.2 was huge, mainly because 2.2 will never be released for my phone, although the old custom 2.1 rom i was using did give me a lot of the newer 2.2 options, like Apps2SD (apps to sd card) and tethering.

I am not sure if its a Froyo2.2 or part of the custom rom i now use, but i can have a total of 7 swipe able home screens LOL, which comes in handy (i only use 5 of them to be honest)

2.2 has been out for a month or so. Who is your carrier? I have a Desire on T Mobile and they aren't upgrading to 2.2 until next month now. CPW phones are generally not tied to a carrier and should/could be on 2.2 now.

I have the Galaxy s and Samsung are supposedly releasing 2.2 this month, Just keep checking the samsung apps on trhe phone. The Samsung apps also have some good stuff on there for free. The Moron Test is a good laugh I also have the snes, genesis, GBA and PS1 emulator on my phone and the games play really well.
