Sciatica
I have a horrible feeling my relationship with off road bikes has taken yet another ugly turn.
March 2009 - ACL rupture. Thanks BUPA. 9 weeks working from home.
March 2010 - Thigh trauma and whiplash. Thanks BUPA
August 2010 - Bad back. Thanks BUPA
In between these times I'd not ridden a motocross bike. 3 rides, 3 injuries!!!!! Visits to my physio are a shamefull time. "What have you been doing this time?"....errrr
Bad back seems to have turned into Sciatica. Pain down whole right leg, like an agressive pins and needles.
How long should this take to sort it's self out? I assume I can still cycle and stuff as long as not causing too much pain?

Christ almighty Dave, what the hell has Clare been doing to you?
No idea on the medical side of things and I would seek a doctor's advice about your exercise regimen but I hope you get sorted out soon.

My business partner who is a climber and badminton player (so quite fit) was diagnosed with sciatica in September last year. He still has it now and can no longer climb or play badminton. In his case it has been extremely painful and has put a large dent in his life. Looking on the bright side sales of anti inflammatory drugs in his locality are up 200%

Sorry to hear about that,mate.
Having suffered from it,in the past,it is not a pleasant experience!
I struggled on,with it,for months, but it got to a point that even driving my car was agony!
I went to see a chiropractor and was given stretching exercises,to do,before and after my gym sessions.
It took a few months to go away, but I have never had bother with it since, and this was 10 years ago.

Sciatica (for me) was caused through spinal compression which ruptured a disk in my back causing a bulge to press against my spinal cord... I had a titanium cage fitted so now I'm part man / part machine from the future, in fact it's now better than before.... if you rupture a disk it can take up to 6 months for it to repair itself (assuming its not too badly damaged) trouble is that it will always remain weak and prone to damage....

I had what DCI had, although the pain went away so I decided against an operation.
Best advice I can give, if you've been told to do exercises continue doing them even after the pain has gone cause, as DCI says, you are always going to be prone to get it.
Mine flared up again once our baby arrived and I was constantly bending to pick him up. Cause I hadn't been doing the exercises to keep my core strengthened.
Good luck Dave, I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

What the DCI said ^^^^^
My problem was a ruptured disc in my lower neck, the cervical vertebrae.
I WAS doing exercise and having an osteo treat it, but an MRI scan showed up part of the disc inner sitting nicely on the spinal cord.
I was warned that further aggravation could lead to total paralysis......even turning over in bed could have been dangerous, and the consultant had me in for an op within 4 weeks. Total rest was advised and various types of movement banned.
DO take advice from a specialist before deciding whether exercise/rest is the best regime.
And by specialist, I don't mean an osteopath.
Oh and the pain? 8 weeks of SCREAMING agony and most of it lost from my memory now due to LOADS of mixed painkillers.

Sounds like pressure on the sciatic nerve for some reason, probably associated with the off road biking.
I have no idea about recovery time etc., but you may have to think of another sport!
