Blackberry Torch/9800...... potentially interesting!
It's not available in the UK yet, but I've registered my interest in it with Vodafone.
It looks like a VERY interesting prospect - the combo of both capacitive touch screen AND qwerty keypad.
http://na.blackberry.com/eng/devices/blackberrytorch/
I'm looking at it as
1. Wifey's Android/Magic contract is due soon, and she's moving into a new job/more business-like app.
2. I'm on an iphone (swear-word) and whilst a vintage Mac-user/nerd, the phone is "meh"..... hasn't set my world on fire. Yes, it integrates very well with my Macs etc, but as a phone, it's nothing spectacular.
But that's almost a side-rant. When my contract is due at the start of next year, it leaves me with a bit of a quandary as to what to do - the iphone 4 is the biggest white elephant. People can try to convince themselves that it is a great bit of kit but
(a) it's slightly faster - 1 point
(b) has OS4 - 0 points (available as a freebie)
(c) well the less said about the "grip-gate" issue, the better.
I'm leaning towards waiting for iphone 5 (or higher) as the 4 seems a bit of a lemon (and yes, I've used one extensively - after all, I'm a Mac-user )
The Blackberry could fill the gap until Apple find their mojo again
Has anybody played with the Torch yet?
Any comments?

Yeh - I played with the Storm..... and considered it for about a nano-second.
Didn't like the (slow) clickable touchscreen. Didn't have Wifi either, which I use all the time on my iphone (and my previous N95).....
The OS etc looked pretty good, even on OS4 (iirc)....
Storm 2 was meant to be better, but I think this 9800 could be the missing link.....
Maybe!

Yeah the Torch is very interesting to me too. Goes hand in hand with OS 6.0, so for any of the BB devices running it, the 9800 will be the best of the bunch for now.
I will be getting one, even if its only to play with it and sell it on.
Launches in the USA tomorrow, so should not be too long.
Lots of talk on crackberry about it, and the first look video makes it seem quite attractive (for people who like such devices)
The Storm was a horrible phone IMO, no use to me what so ever.

Noooo. iPhone is MUCH better than storm!
Don't get me wrong the iPhone isn't sh1te. It's a good phone gadget but it's expensive for what it is however it has a truly fantastic touchscreen/user-interface - something the storm (& most other phones for that matter) lacks.
I may not have much love for the iPhones at the moment but I'm not going to slag it off unnecessarily (after all I'm a mac fan boy )

If you get a blackberry you'll realise they're boring and can be just as buggy and the apps are ****e. I made the mistake of making the switch from a 3G to a 8900 then went back to a 3G.

Ant, re buggy, thats what you get for running leaked or hybrid software lol.
As for interfaces etc, I have to agree they are not exciting, and far from the Apple approach, but functional all the same.
OS 6.0 however addresses that a little.

Yeh Storm 2 addresses some of the inherent failings of the Storm, but nevertheless, it still was/is lightyears behind the competition (including the iphone, imho)

Sadly a few traits are carried over to the Torch from other phones in the BB range. Same CPU as the 9700, same res as the Storm. But all in having read the review it looks like I will have to get one regardless. Sadly Orange have already said they are getting them lol
